Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - The Oscars

story.oscars.jpgWith the Oscars this weekend it seemed only right to find a suitable leading man for this segment. But alas, the five men nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role tend to be pretty much clean-shaven. Philip Seymour Hoffman was clean-shaven in his role as Capote. Same for Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain, Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line, and David Strathairn in Goodnight and Good Luck. Only Terrence Howard for his role in Hustle & Flow shows any kind of facial hair, and that's just a pretty standard mustache/goatee combo.

So what gives? I think it may have to do with the era in which the movies take place. The four clean-shaven movies all take place during the middle of the 20th century, while the one with facial hair is present day. Styles definitely change, and while people in the middle of the century were more reserved, unique facial hair is one aspect of today's self-expression. We may look back on those crazy oughts and wonder, "what was I thinking?" But for now, flaunt your facial hair. Here's to hoping for a more exciting crop next year.
