Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - Presidents!
With all this talk of presidential candidate and how much money they've raised, I thought it might be a good time to ask - Who was the last president to sport facial hair? Give up? Why it's our 27th president William Howard Taft, in office from 1909 to 1913. That means it's been almost 100 years since our last president with facial hair. What does can we glean from that? People with facial hair aren't as trustworthy? Or clean-shaven men are more likely to want to rule the free world.
Whatever it is, the trend seems likely to continue. The current list of Democratic and Republican 2008 presidential candidates shows an entirely clean-shaven field. I'm sure the pollster geniuses in the backrooms have determined that facial hair today is the kiss of death for a candidate.
Anyway, for a full run-down of all things presidential and facial-hair related, visit Nicholas Whyte's Facial Hair and Presidential elections site, filled with fun facts like
- 1 election where a candidate with a moustache beat a cleanshaven opponent: 1908
- 3 elections where a candidate with a beard beat a candidate with a moustache: 1864, 1880, 1888 (at least officially)
- 1 election where both major candidates had moustaches: 1904
And in case all of you were wondering, the last president to have a full beard was Benjamin Harrison (1889 - 1893).
