I've always been dubious about these sorts of style over substance arguments with regards to what works and what doesn't in politics: taller is better than shorter, short simple names are better than long complicated names, etc., because beyond a certain level they amount to pronouncing the average voter a moron on little evidence. To the extent that they have any effect it would be on voters with little interest in the major issues or in those rare case where there is little difference on the major issues between the major party candidates.
Truth is John Bolton couldn't have picked a better year than 2012 to break the facial hair taboo. If present trends continue, the Republican nominee, assuming a willingness to promise to repeal Obamacare, cut taxes, and cut spending, will cruise to a massive landslide victory over the Obamessiah whether sporting a mustache, a beard,...
or a single in the middle of the forehead.
