August Wrap-Up

August was a great month at ShavingStuff. We reached record levels of subscribers and traffic due in large part to Yahoo! featuring us as one of their daily picks. Thanks Yahoo!

We were blown away by the ShaveMyFace.com site recommended by Stan at Pacific Shaving Company. Spend some time there if you haven't already. Also, we had a couple of tips and advice posts from Brave Soldier and a/MEN/ity.

We dabbled a little more than usual in pubic hair shaving with posts about the Seiko Cleancut and the Bodworx Body Shaver, but hey, that's what a lot of our readers seems to want.

And finally, my favorite - Micah Ganske's Photoshop-enhanced shaving self-portrait from the New York Times, which is still available online. Check it out before it falls into their pay archives.

Merkur Progress Adjustable Double Edge Safety Razor

B000A0Qqrq.01-A285Osz7Wvwqmv. Sclzzzzzzz We've just gotten word from Shaving Stuff.com reader Mark that the Merkur Progress razor is quite the old school way to go if you want an interesting shaving experience.

"M3P's are good, but if you really want to go "old school" try a Merkur Progress adjustable safety razor. You have to pay a little more attention compared to the M3P but the shave is even better, and good safety razor blades are under $0.50 a piece...sometimes a lot less."

The Merkur Progress adjustable double edge safety razor allows you to change the angle of the blade inside the razor head. Simply twist the handle for a close, comfortable shave with fewer ingrown hairs, post-shave pimples, or razor bumps.

Have You Bought Your M3Power Yet?

6025.jpgHello ShavingStuff readers! It's good to be back. Vacation was great - just the right amount of relaxation to gear up for fall. I want to thank everyone who wrote in while I was gone with tips and suggestions. I'll be getting to them very soon.

While I was traveling I figured I'd give my old Mach3 razor a try. I'd retired this little buddy once the M3Power came out, but after finding it in the bottom of my toiletries bag I decided it was time to go old-school and see if there's a big difference. Boy is there ever. Part of it may have had to do with the high degree of difficulty which comes from shaving in the communal bathroom of a 1950s army barracks since converted to a youth hostel, but I tend to think it was the razor. The Mach3 tugs against your face compared to the M3Power's vibrations which glide across your skin. The Mach3's shave is not as close, so you end up going over the same part of your face more times. And, you can use your Mach3 or Mach3 Turbo razors in the M3Power, so if you've stocked up (like I had) at Costco for school, no problem.

Pick one of these hybrid razors up and see for yourself. The battery lasts forever. I've had mine over a year now and haven't had to change it.

Lavender Pre-Shave Oil

P10872005 Ph Hero We know what your thinking - this has to be for women right? Wrong. Lavender is a great scent for men and we've used lavender shave oils in the past along with lavender shaving soaps. What makes this Lavender shave oil interesting is the blend of botanical ingredients as well as essential lavender oil.

We've found time and time again that using pre-shave oil is the way to go. I'll have to let my current shave oil run out before trying this one but I'm pretty sure this is next.

One last thing: only buy shave oils if they come in glass containers. We can't confirm or deny that a non-glass would be bad - but we like the cool feel of the glass bottle and we don't expect the oil to absorb any plastic material if it's in glass.

Get a $50 Gift Certificate When You Buy A Braun Electric Razor

B0002Q67Ea.01. Sclzzzzzzz Ummm...wow. We've been wanting to get the new Braun Activator with LCD Display for some time but at $170 bucks it's pretty steep. Looks like we'll be able to get the new Braun for $120, which puts it into a level of spending we can handle.

Right now at Amazon.com when you spend $129 on Braun/Oral B products offered in the Health & Personal Care store by August 31, 2005 you'll get a $50 gift certificate on future purchases. We should be shaving in style in about a week.

Smart Shave for Men

3 Home We've been looking into several "shaving systems" for men and we like the look of the Smart Shave approach. First they have exfoliating pads for getting the grime off your face before shaving, then you move on to the shaving cream they say is the smoothest yet, and finally you apply their cooling balm.

We are a big fan of the cooling balm here at Shaving Stuff. Most systems try and get you with a cooling balm and some lotion - we like to just cool and forgo the lotion.

Norelco Moi for Me Women's Electric Shaver

I would normally just dismiss this as yet another "imac" like women's shaving product, but we've had several people write in that this is the best little wet/dry electric shaver they've used in quite awhile. It may look like a regular non-electric razor, but it has a built in shaving foil with two trimmers which help to prevent those dreaded bumps. The glider is coated with Jojoba and helps to reduce friction in those more "sensitive" places.

Shaving tips from a|MEN|ity

top_logo.gifThree simple tips from Dwight Schultheis, founder of a|MEN|ity.

1. Drench Your Shave Brush with Hot Water and Lather
2. Use a Sharp Razor and Rinse it Often
3. Nourish Your Face after Each Shave

For a little more on each step check out their shaving tips here. Also, 25% of their sales of Original Pink shaving cream are donated to Men Against Breast Cancer. Plus, an aftershave lotion named Ahh.... How can you go wrong?

By the way, I love their tag-line - "Natural. Organic. Crap-free Ingredients." That's got to win an award.

USB iShaver from Thanko

Remember this little gem - the iPod mod shaver attachment? Looks like one company took the joke a little too seriously. Introducing the Thanko USB-powered iShaver.

I made a ton of jokes about USB-powered flashlights when they came out, but I now know several people who swear by them when using their laptop in low light situations, so I'll restrain my knee-jerk reaction to poke fun. Perhaps they fill a need.

Thanks for engadget for this article. If you can read Japanses you might want to click on over to this site and learn more. The only thing I can get is something is 80cm, which I think is like 3 years. Must be talking about the warranty.

Bodworx Body (and Pubic) Shaver

personal-shaver.gifPart of the mission of ShavingStuff.com is to report on various shaving products for all types of shaving, and while I tend to focus on the face, a lot of readers are looking for help elsewhere. So, here's another pubic hair shaver that you might want to look into - the Bodworx Body Shaver, for $96.90 $79.95 $69.95 $59.95, as seen in Esquire magazine. Key features include:

* Micro-fine shaving screen
* Works on male and female pubic hair
* All over body hair removal too

Look, I can't begin to endorse this. I have no idea how well it works. I don't trust the testemonial (ironically because it gives the guy's email address), and the web page reads like an informercial, complete with requisite "But wait, there's more..." lines. However, if you're in the market to shave your pubic hair, include the Bodworx Body Shaver in your research.

Shaving Porn

I don't know why people feel the need to tell the world about their most embarassing moments in the most public of all media, but they do. And then we laugh at them. Case in point - The day I decided to trim my Sideburns by "Bumpered". Here's my synopsis: Mr. Bumpered wanted shorter sideburns. He decided to do it himself. Chaos ensues.

Content: A-
Format: B+

The story reads like porn for the shaving-obsessed:

As the clippers sprang to life Joe swung the chair away from the mirror. I wasn’t able to see what was going to happen. I guess it was another price I had to pay. Joe pushed my head to the side and ran the clippers up over the new hairline I had created. He cut high into the hair that I hadn’t touched. I watched the remnants of my hair fill my lap. Joe slowly moved around my head. I could now feel a coolness brush across my scalp. Several times Joe changed the blades on the clippers. It seemed to take forever.

Damn. I'm all hot and bothered. Read the full story here.

Micah Ganske's Shaving Self Portrait

This past Sunday's New York Times had a really cool article on Micah Ganske, winner of the 2005 Adobe Design Achievement Awards, where Photoshop is not only encouraged, it's the law. Kind of like a baseball league where steroids are mandated. Micah's picture shows himself shaving in the mirror with both hands clearly visible in front of him. So where's the camera?

Click on the "Slide Show" link on this page to see how Micah put the final shot together. (Here's the link directly to the slideshow if you're anti-javascript -

Styptic Pencil - A Cure For Nicks and Cuts

Every heard of a styptic pencil? I hadn't. But the more I read about them the more I understand their place in a standard set of shaving tools. The contain aluminum sulfate which acts as an astringent to stop the bleeding of small razor cuts and nicks. Just a little dab'll do ya! And they're cheap:

$4.00 at Caswell-Massey
$1.50 at Knifecenter.com
$1.49 at Drugstore.com

Does it hurt? You betcha! But weigh a bleeder against a sting and I'll bet you opt for the quick fix.

Dermatologist advice from Brave Soldier

brave_soldier.gifMost FAQs are rather boring and obviously written without any idea for the real questions someone might ask. Here's one that breaks the mold. Ask Dr. Kest from Brave Soldier contains great questions and advice, despite the occasional self-promotion. Here's an example:

Q: I've recently started to use pre-shave oil. It gives me a really smooth shave with no irritation, but it contains olive oil. Should I be worried about clogged pores?

A: If you aren't experiencing negative side effects from the pre-shave oil, then continue to use it. Olive oil is a great moisturizer. If your face is excessively oily after shaving, wash with a mild cleanser when you're done with the razor.

Lots of info on how to deal with acne and other skin irritations. Worth a quick read if you care about the skin on your face.

Gillette Mystery Solved

29012880_d3d4016d2e.jpgLast week we reported on the story of Todd Lappin and his sexually ambiguous shaving cream. Today a follow up. Turns out the practice of reusing pre-printed shaving cream containers is common when resources are scarce. From Shani Jarvis, PR spokesperson for Gillette:

Occasionally, our manufacturing facilities encounter an excess in containers used for packaging one particular product. Rather than discarding these containers, the packaging may be re-labeled and used for another product.

She goes on to say that the contents always reflect the packaging, meaning men's and women's formulas are different. Read the whole story at gelfmagazine.com.

Special thanks for Laura Kovacs for this story. Check out her blog ShirtSnob for all that's hip above the hip.

Seiko Cleancut - The Pornstars' Choice

sieko.jpgSo you want to shave down there. Then you're going to want the Seiko Cleancut ES-412 Shaver. And not just because Amazon reviewer J Love "Jen"'s friend told her that the Seiko is popular in the adult entertainment business, you're going to want it because... well... actually that's why you're going to want it.

The Seiko offers a dry shave, and most sites recommend using some sort of talc-free powder before you shave. Also, your pubes need to be "stubble length", so do some prep work with a trimmer or (careful!) pair of scissors.

$59.95 at Amazon. $59.99 at ShopInPrivate.com. Please, spend some money on quality here.

July Wrap-Up

In case you missed it, July featured a number of articles on shaving creams, gels, and lotions. We profiled Follique and Breej for razor bumps and ingrown hairs, Anthony.com's set of high-end shaving products, shaving oil from Pacific Shaving Company, and my favorite - the Gillette men's shaving cream which turned out to be women's Satin Care.

We also saw the Philips Bodygroom, which is still not available in the US, the old-school Blue Willow Shaving Mug, and Schick's Tunes to Shave By.

For recommended reading, we have the definitive site for shaving your head, women's shaving tip from about.com, a spoof on Maria Sharapova, and a book on guy's habits with very revealing stats.

Finally, we welcomed Razor's Direct to the ShavingStuff family. Click on over and save some money.
