Egyptian, Greek, and Roman Shaving Trivia

egypt_shaving.jpgHere's a little mindless info on shaving throughout history courtesy of the Daily Bubble:

The Egyptians, both men and women, made a fetish of shaving not only their faces but also their heads and any other body hair. Razors of gold and copper have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The mysterious Etruscans have left us fine razors of bronze. Somehow, their inheritors, the Romans, retreated to iron, which rusted away, leaving few archaeological examples.

Read on at DailyBubble.com to learn about the Greeks and the especially Romans, who kept the hair from their first shaves in "ornate receptacle[s]". Why haven't I seen one of these at a museum?

By the way the picture on the right is labeled "Egyptian Limestone Ostracon (Stone Flake with a Head-Shaving Scene)" and comes from GoAntiques.com. God I love google. I'm definitely buying stock the next time they IPO.

Single Serve Shaving Cream Pods

babson.gifReaders of our sister site Single Serve Coffee know all about coffee pods - those magical little pouches which hold exactly enough coffee beans for the perfect cup o' joe. Could that idea translate into shaving? A bunch of crazy Babson students think so.

Pods for shaving cream dispense exact amount of shave cream in pre-packaged capsules for one time use. Easily stored in slim travel case for the well-groomed, upwardly-mobile urban male. Babson students designed the new product for a|MEN|ity, maker of premium line of shaving and men’s grooming products.

We at ShavingStuff applaud the pioneering entrepreneurship Babson and a|MEN|ity are taking in creating a new shaving market segment. Kudos and good luck. No word yet on whether these pods will ever see the light of day, but we'll have news and reviews (and a new category) if they do.

King of Shaves' Micro Magnetically Enhanced Shaving Gel

magnagel_mme.jpgI love technology. People, we are living in great times. Remember Billy Jealousy's silicon beads? Well say hello to the King of Shaves' MagnaGel MME Shaving Gel, winner of FHM's 2005 "Best Shave" and runner-up in the "Best Grooming Innovation" awards. What makes MagnaGel MME Shaving Gel so special? Science.

MagnaGel MME (Micro Magnetically Enhanced) shaving gel sets the new standard for shaving software. Micro-magnetically enhanced particles 'stick' to the blade throughout the shave, delivering an unsurpassed level of lubrication and protection [...] our DDS [Dual Delivery System] is now incorporated at a micro-pore level as well as in the capsules! Vitamin E and grapeseed oil are contained in tiny capsules which break when massaged on the skin, delivering a skin-perfecting burst of ingredients to heal and lubricate more quickly and effectively than ever before. helping to give excellent razor glide.

Magnetic particles?!? Vitamin-filled capsules?!? Yes! Yes! Yes! Look, there's a time and place for all that natural stuff. And then there's a time for man-made genius. I don't see a team of flowers and vines working to make your shave better. Plus, if you use this stuff long enough you'll probably get superpowers.

King of Shaves' MagnaGel MME Shaving Gel is $6.74 at shave.com for 175ml. I think that's like 3 gallons or something.

Panasonic Pro Curve Men's Shaver Triple Blade

PanasonicES8018K.jpgAmazon is currently selling the Panasonic ES8018K Pro Curve Men's Shaver Triple Blade with Linear Motor for only $42.01, and that includes shipping! Boy is that a mouthful.

Some key points - the shaver can be washed with water, but it is not a true wet/dry so you can't use it in the shower. It works with or without the cord plugged in, which means you don't have to wait for it to charge if the battery ran out, however it fully charges in only an hour. Oh, and the motor spins at 13,000 rpms. And the motor is linear. Does that really matter? I have no idea, but someone thought you should know.

More Hot Lathery Goodness from Conair

OK, I'll admit it. When I wrote about the Conair Chrome Hot Lather Machine last month I couldn't imagine who might buy one of these things. Turns out a lot of ShavingStuff readers have. I was wrong. This just might be the sleeper shaving gift of the year. So, without further ado, let me present the full line of Conair hot lather, lotion, and gel machines:

First, there's the Conair HLD20 Heated Lotion Dispenser - $23.54 at Amazon, for heating up lotion to a comfortable temperature before it hits your face:

2 Minute Heat Up Time. Variable Heat Control. Works with Any Lotion. 16 Oz. Dishwasher Safe Reservoir.

In the lather department, there's the Conair HLM10R Hot Lather Machine - $23.45 at Amazon

Designed for easy one-handed use. Heats up in approximately 1 minute. Works with standard size or large size shaving cream cans. Ready indicator light

Next, there's the Conair HLM11L Chrome Hot Lather Machine - $16.99 at Amazon, which has all the features of the HLM10R plus it's chrome and it's cheaper.

The previous two models are for shaving cream only. No gel allowed. If you're a shaving gel man, you'll want the Conair HGM15 Hot Gel Machine - $20.65 at Amazon.

Finally, if you're a switch-hitter, you're going to want the Conair HGL1 Gel and Lather Heating System (pictured) - which retails for $29.99 and seems to be sold out on Amazon and on Conair's website, so I'd suggest Froogle.

So there you have it. Conair's full range of hot lather, lotion, and gel products. Get 'em while they're hot!

Zia in the Hizzouse!

A couple weeks ago we wrote about Zia's new men's shaving sets - the Skin Hydrating Gift Set and the Skin Clearing Gift Set (both $19.95). Well, the good folks at Zia sent over one of each for review and they arrived last night. Thanks Zia! We'll be putting them through our normal ShavingStuff test-drive over the next couple weeks and will have a review just as soon as it's ready. In the meantime, consider these gift sets at the holidays approach, especially if you've got a man who insisted on all natural ingredients.

Shave Your Back With Razorba

You might have noticed that each post on ShavingStuff goes into one or two categories. These categories include reviews, shaving creams and gels, we've even got one for head shaving. Well today we welcome a new category to ShavingStuff - back shaving. And this is the very first post in the back shaving category, and it may be the only one for a long time. Frankly, I can't believe I'm even writing about this, but here goes...

Do you have a lot of hair on your back? Do you want to get rid of it yourself? Do you want a product specifically designed for this task? Well, search no longer. Introducing the Razorba, pronounced ray-zor-buh.

The Razorba™ is the patented razor handle wand that holds your favorite razor, ergonomically designed and tested by men with back hair. It solves the problem of back hair by letting you shave it at your convenience, any time you need it. Works with any standard razors.

Now that description gives you a sense of what this thing does, but please click over to razorba.com if nothing else to see the little low-tech Flash animation on how this thing works. Then, if you're more adventuresome, and have a strong stomach, click on over to this page to see the Razorba in action from the TV show Unscrewed with Martin Sargent. Warning - gratuitous back-hair scene.

The Razorba starts at $29.95 at razorba.com. "Razorba - We Got Your Back"

More Clips on ThatsThePowerOf4.com

screen.pngJust a quick post to let you all know that ThatsThePowerOf4.com has put up some new video clips, continuing their spoof infomercial. Haven't been to ThatsThePowerOf4.com? Well, let me say this... it's interesting. This is Schick's website devoted to the Schick Quattro Power, made to look like a cheesy infomercial, "As Seen on TV"-style. Some of the clips are kind of humorous. Some feature Kato Kaelin. And some verge on showing an attractive woman. Overall they're not as edgy or indy as you'd want from a website. But hey, it's Friday and if you're stuck at the office, click on over to ThatsThePowerOf4.com and view a few clips. At least the production quality is high.

And if I may muse for a moment, why they didn't get schickquattropower.com (like schickquattro.com) is beyond me. Why the domain schickquattropower.com is still available is crazy, by hey, that's why I'm not in marketing.

Free TurboScrub at Heavy Duty

Heavy Duty is gearing up for the shopping season with this special offer - buy $30 worth of products and you'll get a free travel size TurboScrub (aka exfoliant). Here's their description:

HEAVY DUTY TurboScrub is the ideal way to get your skin in mint condition. Large granules of pumice, apricot, and walnut shells remove surface skin cells and soften and polish the skin. Perfect on feet, back of the arms, and any other dry areas on the body.

You may remember our introduction to Heavy Duty over the summer when we came across them in a rather prestigious auto show. Love their packaging. Definitely check out AutoStrip ($16) if you're looking for a new shaving cream, and the JumpStart Kit ($25) makes a great gift.

The free TurboScrub offer ends December 20th so start those engines.

Panasonic ES8077S Vortex HyrdroClean

vortex.jpgBack in October we reported on the Panasonic ES8077S Vortex HyrdroClean which had fallen to $129.99. Now this electric razor is down to $86.51 at Amazon. The catch - the old rebate. The current price on Amazon is $106.51, but there's a rebate which gets you $20 back. So be diligent. Manufacturers and retailers are counting on you to forget to send the rebate in. Prove them wrong! Save some money. Be a smart consumer. And enjoy your shave.

Old-School Shaving Supplies from Clubman Online

ShavingStuff reader Chuck just wrote in about a site he recommends - Clubman Online. Clubman specializes in old-school shaving products like 100% badger brushes, shave soap cakes, and 1960's-style twin blades. They've got a fine selection of handmade products, including combs perfected by nine generations of Swiss craftsmen, and brushes made on the Isle of Man.

Old Original Shaving Brushes are made for us on the Isle of Man (located in the Irish Sea) by Progress-Vulfix. Made from the finest pure badger hair, our brushes will give years of excellent, luxurious service. Progress Vulfix has been producing shaving brushes for over half a century and is the premier manufacturer of badger brushes in the United Kingdom.... All the brushes are handmade and come in three quality grades - Pure Badger (good), Super Badger (better), and Silver Tip Badger (very best)...

These brushes range from $19.95 to $110.00, so if you can't decide which of the three badgers is for you, I suggest chilling out at www.badgerbadgerbadger.com and letting your brain unwind.

More Electric Shaver Deals Amazon

norelco-elec.jpgCouple of electric razor options if you're looking to buy - Amazon is offering the Norelco 6613X Reflex Plus Rechargeable Cordless Men's Shaving System for $29.99, which includes free shipping. There are several 5-star reader reviews for this shaver, but what caught my eye was the Amazon product description by "Emily Bedard". First of all, what's a women doing reviewing an electric razor meant for a man's face? And second of all, what kind of a name is Emily Bedard? Seems a little strange that "Bedard" is only one letter away from "Beard". I have my suspicions.

braun-370.jpgThe second great deal is the Braun 370 Pocket Twist Plus, Battery Operated Shaver for only $10.99 (although you'll have to pad your order to $25 to get the free shipping). Don't be fooled by this guy's little price. Strong reader reviews on this one too, including one in all-caps. SOMEONE REALLY LIKES THIS RAZOR.

Yeah. This thing is sleek enough that we're breaking with our standard right-aligned thumbnail template and plopping it full size right smack in the middle. Remember when I was talking about class the other day? "Objective: To achieve an old school, old fashioned classic shave." Mission accomplished.

The shave set includes a solid, classic stand, sleek razor and a luxurious badger hair brush; all plated with "Nickel" of the highest quality.

Learn the Proper Way To Shave From Anthony

We mentioned Anthony - Logistics for Men back in July when we wrote about their shaving kit (which is now $50, reduced from $78). If you didn't check out their site then, please do so now. Anthony's instructions on shaving are perhaps the best we've seen on any website. Take every point here to heart - from shaving on a clean face, using cool water in your final rinse, and patting your face with a towel (not rubbing) when you're done. The detail he provides is right on. The problem solvers page is similarly great, with product recommendations to treat specific ailments.

Aside from shaving and other men's products, Anthony's also has a shampoo and body wash for "Little Men".

A gentle self-foaming cleanser that softens and conditions. Leaves baby smelling fresh and clean. Will not overly dry hair or skin.

Now baby can use the same products as daddy. Cute!
