We've Moved Hosts! More ShavingStuff.com Speed and Power!

blopire_120.jpgShavingStuff, and all Blogpire websites, has moved hosting facilities. Seems we're all growing so well that we outstripped the bandwidth and CPU limitations of our previous internet provider. But that's good news, since it means we've got tons of dedicated readers like you who keep coming back to our site. So thanks! And even though we've moved, we're still the same bat-time, same bat-URL.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - Bruce Springsteen

bruceNewsImage_alt.jpgYou may know him as "The Boss", "Bruuuuuuuuuuce!!!!", or maybe just "that guy who does those old folks songs," but one way or another, you know him. Today's Facial Hair Friday Celeb is musician Bruce Springsteen, whose new album "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions" came out this week. That's Pete Seeger, for all you young'uns.

Bruce has sported all types of facial hair throughout his career, from scraggly beard in his early days, to clean-cut, to five o'clock shadow, to goatee. These days The Boss has been wearing the soul patch, a simple tuft of hair under the lips. I think the subtly works. Also, there's a fair chance the rest of his beard is starting to gray, so the patch is a good compromise.

Shave it or save it? I'd save it for now, but I'm sure he'll shave it soon enough.

Get 130 Shaves Per Razor with Razor Saver?

A ShavingStuff reader recently wrote in and asked if we'd review the Razor Saver. Since we've been talking about oils which prolong the life of your blades, it seems highly relevant. Thing is, I can't find much information about the Razor Saver, other than the link on TheSustainableVillage.com and this article from 1998.

It appears that the Razor Saver sharpens your razor, presumably like a knife sharpener, when you stick the razor into the device. According to Charles J. Fletcher, president of the company which makes the Razor Saver, it works on all popular razor brands such as Gillette and Schick, although it's unclear whether they've tested it on newer razors like the Fusion or the Quattro.

I must admit I'm a little skeptical, if for no other reason that there's little info on this contraption on the web. However, if you're willing to be a guinea pig for ShavingStuff, the Razor Saver is only $12. Write in a review and we'll give you top billing for the day.

Get a Smoother Shave with RazorRESCUE

razorrescue.gifHere's another product along the lines of RazorGuard or RazorMax, and no it's not just the name that's similar. It's RazorRESCUE, and it's another oil you store your razor in to keep it sharp and prolong its life. We reviewed RazorMax a while back and found that it does indeed add shaves to your razor, but we also found that simply drying your razors really well did a pretty darn good job too.

The one thing which really caught my eye on their website (aside from the fact that it looks like it was designed in 1996 using Dreamweaver 0.9beta2) was that they recommend you "Rinse your razor in cold water as you shave." I have never heard anyone suggest that before, and even though the reason sounds plausible - "This will keep the metal in the blade taught reducing the chance of bumps, nicks and cuts." - I'm a little afraid to try it. Does anyone else out there shave with a cold razor? If so, I'd like to hear about it.

RazorRESCUE is $16.95 for a 4oz. bottle. The cold shave is available for free, if you dare...

Review of Kiss My Face Key Lime Moisture Shave

Kiss My Face. I dare you... Go on... kiss it.

Kiss My Face is a line of skin-care products, "obsessively" devoted to using all natural and organic ingredients. They've got everything you'll need, from soaps to toothpaste, moisturizers to shower gels, and of course, shaving cream. And not just one - Key Lime, Peach, Vanilla, Lavendar, to name a few flavors. They've even got fragrance-free if somehow one of these doesn't appeal to you. For me, it's Key Lime. I've been using Kiss My Face's Key Lime Moisture Shave for a couple weeks now, and I'm ready to declare it a winner.

Now I should mention, I love Key Lime pie. When I was young my family took a trip down to southern Florida and the Keys. My dad and I went on a quest for the ultimate Key Lime pie, stopping at every restaurant and road-side stand which claimed to have the best. Some people might have gotten sick from this experience, never wanting to see another Key Lime pie in their life. And for others, like me, it only made my love stronger. So imagine my delight at finding a Key Lime shaving cream - the combination of two passions.

OK, as you probably can guess, I tasted it. And no, it's not delicious. In fact it's downright nasty. But I did it for the site, and you my readers. Aw, who am I kidding. I just couldn't resist.

So let's get down to business. Kiss My Face's Key Lime Moisture Shave foams up to a rich, white lather. It's a little more soapy than other shaving creams I've used in the past, but still contains a nice bit of oil to lubricate your skin against the razor. In fact, one of the things I really liked about Key Lime Moisture Shave was that my skin was still slick after the first pass of the razor, so if I missed a spot there was enough lubrication for touch-ups.

Key Lime Moisture Shave is chock full o' natural goodness and smells great. Check out this ingredients list:

Lime is a natural cooling antiseptic and also acts as an astringent. Our Key Lime Moisture Shave contains a moisturizing formula with antiseptic Peppermint to cool and stimulate, emollients Olive Oil and Coconut Oil and Aloe Vera for healing. Goldenseal heals and acts as an antiseptic. Arnica aids circulation. Lady's Mantle is an astringent and has styptic properties. Sage, Horsetail, and Orangeflower act as astringents and refreshers. Soapwort is rich lathering, effective with acne, and like Lemon Grass, cleansing. Vitamins A, and E, the nutrients so important for healthy skin, complete the shave.

Um... soapwort? Had to read up on that. Thanks Wikipedia.

My only issue with this shaving cream was that is tended to dry my face out a little. I'd recommend it for people with oilier skin, or maybe as a summer shave. Also, you should consider how foamy you like your shaving cream. If you like a rich, thick lather (soapwort!) , this stuff is for you. If you prefer a clearer, less-foamy cream which still shows your skin, use something else.

Key Lime Moisture Shave is available at KissMyFace.com, and also at many local natural foods stores, like Whole Foods markets. At $6 for 11oz or $4 for 4oz, it's one of the cheapest shaving creams we've endorsed. Just try not to eat it.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - Wilmer Valderrama

This week's star of Celebrity Facial Hair Friday is none other than Wilmer Valderrama. You know him now as Fez on That '70s Show, but soon the world will know him as Francis "Ponch" Poncherello in the upcoming 2008 remake of CHiPs. Wilmer had maintained a young, clean-shaven look during his TV tenure, but is now sporting several days of growth to make him look tougher and more mature. And a little dangerous. I like it!

Oh, and what's Mr. Valderrama reaching for in this picture? Why it's Baxter of California shaving products! (This week has somehow turned into Baxter week.) Yep, the stars were out at Sundance recently, and many of them wandered into the Gibson / Intuition House. Here's a link to many of the celebs (courtesy of Getty Images) who perused the shelves, including Timothy Hutton, Crispin Glover, and Terrence Howard. Hey, they like Baxter... maybe I should too... See how that works?

Introducing Fuzzy Logic Shampoo from Billy Jealousy

Our friends over at Billy Jealousy just launched a new shampoo called Fuzzy Logic. Sure, it's not exactly shaving-related, but it is a new product from a company which makes one of our favorite shaving creams. So you should know. And now you do.

Keep your hair and your cool. Protect yourself with Fuzzy Logic, an advanced peppermint shampoo formula fortified with DHT blocking agents, fighting hair loss at its roots. Clear in color, Fuzzy Logic will protect your magnificent mane of hair, allowing you to focus more on getting looks for the right reasons.

Don't be fooled by the tag-line - "fighting hair loss at it's roots". This shampoo is for all men - from bushy Chia head to bowling ball. Well, maybe not bowling ball men. But all fuzzy men.

Fuzzy Logic is available now for $22 bottle.

Baxter in the House!

You mean Meredith Baxter-Birney - the mom from Family Ties? Nope try again. How about Baxter - the crazy black comedy film from 1989? Nope, but that was a good guess. It's Baxter of California, silly! And they're already in the house. Didn't just post about them on Monday? Damn they're fast.

Yep - the good folks over at Baxter sent over a tube of their Super Close Shave Formula for us to check out, along with a bunch of travel-size free samples. We'll be putting their cream to the test over the next couple weeks, but if you want some free samples of your own, click on over to their free sample page. OK, it's not entirely free. You do have to pay $4.95 for shipping. But if you calculate in inflation and the fact that you're going to live to 100 years old, that's like 3 cents in future dollars.

French Men Love Baxter's of California, Shouldn't You?

The April 7th issue of Women's Wear Daily contains an article entitled A French Focus on Men's Skin Care, which mentions Baxter's of California, a shaving brand we've featured here before. Sadly, the site requires a login, so unless you're a paying subscriber you're going to have to settle for squinting at the tiny font in the image on the right (which contains the full text). The basic gist of the article is this - the men's grooming business is seeing double-digit growth in France, fueled in part by niche brands such as Baxter's of California. Seems men are finally starting to take an interest in skin care, demanding a wider selection of high-quality products to choose from. They are also interested in trying new products from the smaller players who specialize in one area of skin care - like shaving.

We at ShavingStuff applaud this trend. It's high time we men had the variety and quality available in women's skin care products. That's one French movement we hope goes world-wide.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - Jesus

Good Friday to you all! In celebration of today, and the upcoming Easter, we feature Jesus as our Facial Hair Friday celeb. I think he needs little introduction.

Jesus (pictured, right) is often depicted with a full beard and moustache, probably because back then the Fusion hadn't been invented yet. (Actually if you're interested in how people shaved B.C. check out this post from late last year.) The Jesus look is quite popular in the music scene - Waylon Jennings, Greg Allman, Jason Lee in Almost Famous, to name a few.

How do you achieve "the Jesus"? It's simple, really. Stop shaving. I'd recommend talking to your wife or your boss before doing this, but hey, sometimes you've got to heed the lord's calling.

Dovo - The Very Best In Nose Hair Trimmers

Want the Rolls Royce of nose hair trimmers? Look no further than the Dovo - $29.95 and free shipping from C. Crane (.com). You may recognize the Dovo brand from their stylish and highly praised straight razors, but don't try sticking a long sharp blade up your nose.

Precision and sharpness are essential for nose hair trimmers, and this one always keeps a perfectly fine edge. Great for trimming around the ears, too, and it does the job without batteries.

You've got to admit, the Dovo has got to be the most beautifully designed nose hair trimmer out there. I mean, look at that polished, gleaming metal. Your nose deserves no less. Time to get rid of that $9.99 Sharper Image special and upgrade.

Would You Like Ants With Your Razors?

fusion_razors.jpgA couple weeks ago we posted about Gillette Fusion razors at Amazon - an 8-pack was only $14.99. (If you missed it the price is back up to $24.99.) So I bought two 8-packs, thinking that for less than two bucks a razor it was a good deal. This morning a box from Amazon showed up at my office, filled with ants. Live ants. Oh yeah, I think there were some razors in there too.

After smushing most of the ants that hadn't taken refuge in my keyboard, I surfed on over to Customer Support at Amazon and sent in feedback which went something like:

Shipment of razors arrived. Box included live ants. I didn't order ants. Requesting an RMA so I could return them... (the ants)

Well score one for Amazon's customer service. Later this afternoon I received an email from Neeraj:

I am sorry to hear about the problem you experienced with your shipment. I have placed a new order for the item. There is no charge for this replacement. [...] If you need to contact us again about this return or the replacement order, please visit the following link and select "Returns & Refunds"

So after all is said and done, it appears I will end up with 32 Fusion razors for only $29.98 - less than a buck a razor. And a bunch of ants. Not a bad deal if you ask me. Thanks Amazon! Maybe you could include a bottle of RAID with the next shipment.

The Seiko Cleancut - Revisited

Back in August last year we posted a little article about the Seiko Cleancut, the Pornstars' choice in pubic shaving. Time to revisit our little buddy, especially in light of some hot, shaver on trimmer action going on over at Amazon. Right now the Seiko ES-412 Cleancut Shaver and Seiko Femini PS-335 T Handle Trimmer are available together for $75.80. Batteries included. Why do you need both? Because as good as the Cleancut is, it won't shave hair longer than stubble length. That's where the Femini Trimmer comes in.

Its ultra fine comb style cutting head is designed to remove hair without pulling, cutting or pinching.

So let's review:
Step 1) Bring it on down to stubble length with the Femini.
Step 2) Finish the job with the Cleancut.

Whether you're using it for "Underarms, Bikini Line, French "landing strip" or even a Brazilian "take it all off" style", this combo's got you covered. Want more info? Check out this great review on AllAboutShaving.com (scroll down a page or two) or this write up on ShavesThere.com. Now if someone could tell me why I'm shaving my pubes with a thermos I'd be all set.

Introducing Cosmedicine from Sephora

Cosmedicine is a new line of skincare products based on a joint effort between Klinger Advanced Aesthetics, Sephora, and John's Hopkins Medicine. No, it's not shaving cream or aftershave, but it does represent an evolution in the development of skincare products, one that I think we'll see more of in the near future. The Cosmedicine line consists of moisturizers, toners, and various other creams, each tested with scientific rigor to prove their beneficial aspects.

Rather than relying exclusively on the traditional beauty measuring tool—the mirror—Klinger sought results based on scientific fact. Johns Hopkins Medicine, a world leader in healthcare, education, and research, consulted on the design and data analysis of clinical studies of this product.

I liken this to the approach that Billy Jealousy has taken by adding tiny silicon beads to their shaving cream, or King of Shaves with their micro-magnetically enhanced particles filled with vitamins. It's one thing to mix a bunch of ingredients and hope for a better shave; it's another to scientifically attack the problem and make use of the latest bio-technology.

The Cosmedicine collaboration was recently reviewed in the Wall Street Journal, however this link is only accessible if you are a paying subscriber. The line of Cosmedicines is available exclusively at Sephora and ranges from $35 to $85. If you're buying other products from Sephora before April 28th, 2006, include coupon code "TRUEBEAUTY" and get a free sample of Cosmedicine™'s Skin Fortifying Serum with your order. If you're interested in reading more, click on over to Sephora and check out the sections under "Learn More About This Brand".

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - The Edge

the_edge.jpgThis week's celebrity facial hair Friday pick is none other than U2's guitarist - The Edge. Born David Howell Evans in 1961, The Edge is known for his innovative guitar style which some have said comes from his early attempts to imitate the bagpipes.

Throughout his career The Edge has sported variations of the goatee, which as you know, has fallen out of favor recently on this site. But somehow he makes it work. Perhaps it's the scruffiness, perhaps it's the intensity. Whatever it is, the man is an original, and for that, we salute you.

OK Edge, play the blues...

Electric Razor Deals at Amazon

Couple of electric razor deals at Amazon we thought you should know about...

First up it's the Remington MS2-370 Titanium MicroScreen 2 Screen Shaver, on sale for $25.01, which means it qualifies for free shipping. This is a cord/cordless razor, so even if you run out of juice you can always plug it in and go. If this little guy isn't right for you, check out Amazon's Remington offer. Buy $99 worth of Remington gear and get a $40 Amazon gift card for a future purchase. Not too shabby.

Next we've got the Norelco 6843XL Reflex Plus Rechargeable Cord/Cordless Men's Shaving System, on sale for $44.99 (which also qualifies for free shipping). Again, a cord/cordless model, which features a "full-width pop-up trimmer" for managing sideburns or other edges. The Norelco has a 60 day satisfaction guarantee, so if you don't like it send it back. However judging by the user feedback on Amazon, this one's a keeper.

Thanks to dealnews.com for these.

Introducing the Hesketh 4x4 Razor

A while back inventor Mark Hesketh wrote in about an idea he had for prolonging the life of a razor. He had noticed that with a multi-blade cartridge, the first blades became dull and worn out much more quickly than the last blades. What if you could exchange the blades? Kind of like rotating your tires. Eureka! A light bulb literally appeared above his head. And thus the idea for a light bulb symbolizing an idea was born.

Actually, the Hesketh 4x4 was born. Mark, knowing a little bit about intellectual property, went out and patented the idea. And that's where it stands today. So listen up all you Gillettes and Schicks of the world. If you're tired of fitting more blades into a razor head, maybe the next step in razor innovation is to think like a Transformer.

For more info, including schematics on swapping blades, click on over to www.heskethrazor.com and read up.

Free Brut Aftershave

brut.jpgThe free offers abound! Last week it was a free Schick Midnight Quattro, this week it's Brut aftershave. If only someone provides free shaving cream next week you'll be all set!

Standard deal, as I'm sure you're all aware - you need to give up an email address, and of course your shipping address. Standard spiel, as I'm sure you're all aware - that's why god invented Hotmail.

Some things to note about this little brut - it's chock full of Aloe and Shea Butter. I recently became a huge fan of Shea Butter during the winter. Nothing beats it for dry skin, especially dry hands. I'll be especially curious to see how it does on the face. We'll have a review shortly after our free sample arrives.

Special thanks to Andy over at TunerBargains.com for sending this one in.

March Monthly Roundup

Time to reflect for a moment on the month of March. We reviewed Blade Runner shaving cream from Origins, which wasn't the greatest, but I'm sure will find a happy home somewhere. We spent some time at Target, looking at their Caldo Razor and the Proraso line of shaving supplies that they're now carrying.

Still shaking my head at this one - a projection of razor growth from the Economist. Is shaving hard news now?

Lots of movement in the beard club and contest world. The boys from the Scarsdale High School Beard Club got official recognition, and Team Beard USA is ramping up for the World Beard and Moustache championship to be held in Anchorage, Alaska in 2009.

Friday celebrities included Terry O'Quinn from Lost, (don't shave like this man), clean cut Johnny Damon from the Yankees, (grow it back!), Moustaches from the 80s, (what was I thinking), and scraggly beards of today, (what am I thinking).

And in an act of shameless promotion, we reiterate our new weekly emails. Sign up and each week you'll receive a summary of all the activity on ShavingStuff delivered to your inbox Monday morning. And it's free! Who loves you?

Schick Announces the New Octo

We've just gotten ahold of plans for the new Schick Octo, an 8-bladed behemoth slated to be released one year from today. Clearly an attempt to leapfrog the Fusion and draw consumers away from switching, the Octo packs an impressive 8 razors in the cartridge head for the ultimate in close shaving.

In a move catering to the Gen-X/Xtreme crowd, the new Schick Octo will be available in eight colors - the standard ROYGBV six of the rainbow, plus Ultra Violet and Infra-Red. Says spokesman Hans Oberme:

Most razors appeal to a broad range of the spectrum. We're pushing the envelope with the Octo by capturing those who live on the fringe.

The new Schick Octo will hit US retail shelves 4/1/07, and have a suggested price of $12.99. Replacement blades will likely be ridiculously expensive.
