Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - John C. Reilly

This week's celebrity facial hair pick is Hollywood actor John C. Reilly. Reilly has been in more quality movies than you can shake a stick at, and I should know. I shake a lot of sticks at things. Reilly's one of those actors like Paul Giamatti who just disappears into parts. From Boogie Nights to Chicago, Magnolia to Gangs of New York, and most recently Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - if Reilly's in it, it's probably great.

For the role of Cal Naughton, Jr in Talladega Nights, Reilly grew a ridiculous mustache, perfect for an over-the-top Will Ferrell movie. Not quite handlebars, but creeping in that direction. He's no doubt shaved by now, but the image leaves this indelible mark on celebrity shaving history. Well done sir! We encourage the use of outrageous facial for comic effect.

A Guide to the Gourmet Shaving Experience

LeisureGuy-60x60.jpgEvery so often it's good to get put in your place. And today that's happening to me. I recently was emailed by the author of LeisureGuy's blog about a specific post he had written entitled A guide to the gourmet shaving experience. As I clicked over and watched my browser's scroll-bar start to shrivel, I felt that twinge of embarrassment set in. Here was a true shaving master.

LeisureGuy's post a guide to the gourmet shaving experience is easily the most broad and informative piece I've ever read on shaving with safety razors. He gently guides you through shaving creams, soaps, razor types, lather bowls, shaving brushes, how to hold a razor, how to clean a razor... - the list goes on. There's also personal experience, reader comments, PDFs, video, links, and more. "How's his punctuation," you ask? "Exemplary."

Here's an example of this style:

Using a safety razor puts you in charge, and going from a multi-blade cartridge to a safety razor is akin to going from an automatic transmission to a manual: you can get better performance by being more in control, but you must learn how to use it and practice your technique and pay attention to what’s going on.

LeisureGuy keeps this post up to date with the latest news, anecdotes, and advice. It's a living document. He's also recently published a list of recommended products for safety razor beginners. I have no doubt that page will grow to rival the other. Check back every so often and find out what's new.

ZIRH Post-Shave Products

If you're just tuning in, over the last couple months we've been testing out close to 10 different ZIRH products. We've had two reviews - pre-shave cleanser and exfoliant, and shaving with ZIRH cream and gel. Part three of our three part ZIRH review focuses on what to do after shaving.

"You have been erased."
OK, so you've finished shaving, you've splashed your face with cool water (got to close up those pores), and now you're ready for ERASE, "An after-shave tonic is designed to zero-in on shaving problems." I love words like tonic. So old-school. ERASE is great for removing extra bits of shaving cream on your face, and sets your skin up for the all important after-shave moisturizer that you're going to use next. Applying tonic right after you shave is really the perfect time. You typically apply a little to a cotton ball and rub it over your face. If you've got a little stubble, this can be shredded wispy nightmare. So applying ERASE after a shave is the way to go. I actually prefer using those little cotton pads over cotton balls. They're already compressed and flat so they seem to apply better. ERASE is $28.50 for 200 ml.

defend.jpg"Defend Yourself!"
What's the most important thing you should be doing with your skin? Moisturizing with sun-block. And DEFEND has got you covered. DEFEND is rated SPF 15, and I can vouch for its effectiveness. I spent many a day on the beach this summer and it's the only thing I used on my face. But DEFEND is also great for everyday use. In fact, it's really necessary if you want great looking skin as you get older. I've used this stuff virtually everyday for the last two months, and it's a real winner. My only complaint is that the smell borders on a lemony household cleaning product. However every other moisturizer I've tried with sun-block smells like sun-block, so in some sense this is a welcome relief. DEFEND SPF 15 Face Moisturizer is $28.50 for 100m. Get some and use it every morning.

Hey kids - don't forget that from now until the end of the year we've got a special coupon available to ShavingStuff readers. Simply enter the coupon code "ShavingStuff" at ZIRH checkout and receive 12% off purchases $40 and over.

Extra credit if you can identify the two movie quotes in the section headers.

The MANGROOMER Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver

It's been close to a year since we updated the Back Shaving category, and today I'm overjoyed to announce we're adding a second post. Without further ado, it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the MANGROOMER Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver. Yes it's the MANGROOMER - in all caps.

MANGROOMER is "the essential do-it-yourself electric back hair shaver" for men. The unique patent pending design enables a man to remove unwanted back hair by himself in the privacy of his own home or while traveling. Every man should have the option to remove unwanted back hair easily by himself, privately, quickly, painlessly and inexpensively. MANGROOMER has a sleek, lightweight, compact design that folds flat for storage and travel and when needed opens easily and quickly for instant use. When the shaver is operated its unique patent pending design enables you to reach all areas of your back with ease. The handle is fully extendable and adjustable and locks into place at various lengths to reach even the most difficult middle and lower portions of the back for men of all sizes.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Definitely click over to Amazon and "see all product images", or surf over to MANGROOMER.com and have fun with Flash. It's the only way you'll truly appreciate this marvel.

The MANGROOMER Back Hair Shaver is $39.95 at Amazon. "Note: Gift-wrapping is not available for this item." Weird. Some advice - wrap this thing before you give it as a gift.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - George Lucas

Like this man needs an introduction. This week's celebrity facial hair pick is Star Wars creator George Lucas. Say what you will about Jar Jar and the prequels, this man has pioneered more innovations in modern cinema than anyone else in recent history, to say nothing of his inventing a modern myth.

George has been in the news lately for donating a whopping $175 million to his alma mater USC, $75 million of which will go towards the building of new facilities for the film school. He was also bestowed the honor of grand marshal of the 118th Rose Parade at the end of this year. Coincidence? I think not.

George has pretty much sported a full beard and mustache throughout the years, which has gradually grown whiter and narrower. It's a good look for him, especially seen here with a thin beard on the jaw-line. Lucas has, how do I put this, no neck. Of course, he has a neck. It's just, he has no discernible neck. So the beard helps to separate the face from the neck. Or what would be a neck.

Shave it or save it? I say, don't change what's working for you. The force is strong with this one.

The Caldo Shaving Brush at Target Offline

You know what sucks? Being thwarted at every turn when you want to buy something online.

Hey Target! I want to buy your Caldo Mach3 razor handle and your new Caldo badger-hair shaving brush.

Guess what. I can't. Been up and down Target's website and I can't find a single link to their Caldo line. According to this press release, there's a whole collection of shaving products.

The Caldo collection is designed for the modern, discerning man who seeks only the finest when it comes to his appearance. Packed with essential vitamins and crucial oils, Caldo formulas tailor to the specific needs of men’s skin including pre- and post-shaving treatments. Caldo’s distinctive fragrance paired with its simple, modern packaging is the perfect compliment to every man’s grooming wardrobe.

When I search for "caldo" on Target's website I get a whole lot of "No items match caldo". We had similar grief back in March when we tried to link to just the razor handle. At that point there was a way to see it. This time it's gone.

Sorry for the rage. I know it's early.

You can check out a picture of the Caldo razor handle and shaving brush on the right. Once again the design looks fantastic. I photographed this ad in last weekend's New York Times "T" Style magazine. Wish I had a picture of better quality to show, but this will have to do.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - Howie Mandel

howie.jpgToday's celebrity facial hair Friday pick is none other than comedian and host of the ever popular Deal or No Deal - Howie Mandel. Howie's got be thanking his lucky stars that's he landed the Deal gig. I haven't seen him since St. Elsewhere back in the 80s.

Actually that's not entirely true. Howie was one of the comedians who gave his version of a particularly graphic and crass joke in the Aristocrats. If you don't know what I'm talking about, don't look into it. Trust me.

Howie used to have hair. And he used to be funny. Case in point, this quote from HowieMandel.com, which accompanies the photo on the left. "This is the first time I grew a mustache. Who says it has to be under your nose. This way I never got food in it."

See? Ha ha ha. Hilarious! Oh Howie You crack me up. Who else would grow a mustache on his cheek just for a joke.

God I hate prop-comics.

What the hell is up with that soul patch? It's so jarring. Maybe if he had a little hair on his head it would balance out the scruf. It's like he's desperately trying to tell the world - hey, I can still grow hair. Really. You know what? I'll bet he colors his soul patch. Most of the other recent pictures I've seen of him show graying facial hair. Just shave it. Shave it and admit to the world that you're done.

Introducing Cool Medium Hair Gel from Billy Jealousy

Another new product from Billy Jealousy. What's going on with these guys? That's like one a month for the last three months. First there was Fuzzy Logic shampoo, then Cashmere Coat conditioner, and now there's Cool Medium hair gel.

For serious styling and that irresistible well-hydrated look, apply Cool Medium, a lighweight medium-hold hair gel, to damp hair. Style as desired. Feel cool. Look hot.

We've come to love Billy Jealousy, starting with their amazing shaving products. (Read our review here.) And now Billy's got our head covered with their new line of hair care. Cool Medium is available today for $15 in a 2oz tub. It also contains DHT blockers which help prevent hair-loss. Good thing, since without hair, you'd have no need for hair gel. See how smart these guys are?

Mantic Shaving on YouTube

Shaving. It's everywhere now. Even on YouTube. Mantic59 has started regular broadcasts on old-school shaving. So far he's got three videos on traditional wet-shaving, a quickie on Internet resources, and part one of an introduction to single-blade shaving (which is the one above).

This stuff isn't Mentos in Diet Coke, or high-school cheerleaders imitating OK Go, but it's not the driest stuff I've seen either. Plenty of 50s cartoons and black and white home-ec films interspliced with razors, blades, and demonstrations. View Mantic59's entire playlist here.

Details for Men has started up their monthly contests, and winning has never been so easy. And you have to use the word "Baxterized" in your haiku.

Review of ZIRH Prepare, Shaving Cream, and Shaving Gel

prepare.jpgTime for round two of ZIRH reviews. If you missed the first installment, we covered Scrub and Clean, an exfoliant and a cleanser from ZIRH. Didn't read it? Go ahead... I'll wait...

OK. Round two features ZIRH's PREPARE, a pre-shave oil; SHAVING CREAM, recommended for heavier beards; and SHAVING GEL, for more average folk. We've been test driving these products for close to a month now, so here we go.

First up - PREPARE Pre-shave Oil. Finally, a real pre-shave oil. We've been testing out some shave oils, which are commonly mistaken for pre-shave oils, but this was our first true pre-shave oil. And let me tell you, there's money in oil. I wouldn't pay $70 a barrel for this stuff, but I would gladly pay $16 to eliminate nicks, cuts, and razor burn. This stuff is great. You actually apply a small amount to your face before warm water (but after a shower), so the first layer on your skin is a slick surface your razor head can glide over. Then you add a layer of water. Finally a layer of shaving cream or gel.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - Matt Leinart

Today's Celebrity Facial Hair Friday pick is Arizona Cardinals Quarterback Matt Leinart.

HOT!!!

The big news about Matt Leinart is that he's having a baby with USC Trojans Women's Basketball star Brynn Cameron.

Also HOT!!!

Their baby is going to be... HOT!!!

Matt was recently at the ESPN ESPY Awards where his alma mater won best game - USC vs Texas in last year's Rose Bowl. And for being invited to the ESPYs, Matt walked away with a major bag of product schwag - a Blockbuster online gift certificate for a free year, a special edition Keurig B60 coffee brewer plus a three-month supply of coffee, and tons more, including our favorite - a ZIRH gift package that includes Smooth Shaving Set, Best Bets Kit, and Age-Defying Duo. NICE!!!

If you want to see all the loot our boy Matt collected, click the image on the left. We've conveniently circled the ZIRH products since they're a little hard to spot. For a complete list of all products given to all invitees, click on over to this article on Deadspin.com and feel your jaw drop.

As far as Matt goes, we love the beard, and we love the clean-shaven look. Matt's one of the lucky ones whose beard grows in evenly all over, meaning he looks good with any degree of stubble. Shave it. Save it. It really doesn't matter.

Norelco 7800XLCC Jet Clean System

When electric razors aren't enough for you, you want a "system". And that's just what Norelco provides with it's 7800XLCC Jet Clean System. Not only do you get a "Precision Cutting System", "Unique Lift & Cut Technology", and "Patented Reflex Action", you also get the "Jet Clean and Charge System".

Want to see the jet clean system up close and personal? Just enlarge the photo on the right. Yeah, can you imagine that reaction going on all day on your bathroom counter? If I didn't know better I'd think someone was making heavy water for a reactor.

The price of the Norelco 7800XLCC Jet Clean fluctuates. Currently it's around $96, but Amazon puts this bad boy on sale every so often, and we've seen it as low as $50. Total steal. Buy a second one and sell it on eBay.

Introducing Skin and Scar Repair from By142

Lots of stuff coming into the ShavingStuff test lab these days. Last week we got an email about a new company called By142 (pronounced b. y. 142) which has launched a line of skin-care products backed by some high-end chemistry. And this week we've received two for a test drive.

First up is Scar Repair, a product designed to heal "the surface of the skin and reduce the appearance of new and existing red or raised scarring." Scar Repair contains Rejuvenox (among other ingredients), "previously only used in the military and medical field for wound repair." Serious? Yep. Now available to you and me. It's like the Hummer - previously only available to the military; now available to all. OK, maybe not the best example, but you get my point. What was once only available to the elite, is now available to John S. Public. (The 'S' stands for "Shaver".) We'll be testing it on razor burn and overall recovery after shaving.

We also got a tube of Skin Repair,

The most technologically advanced multi-purpose cream to immediately treat and heal the skin for redness, irritation, inflammation and itching; due to damage caused by the environment, post UV or wind damage; allergic irritants, insect bites and rosacea; topical dermatological procedures.

I plan on letting this tube loose in the kitchen and seeing what it whips up for dinner. And also trying it out as a post-shave healer.

By142 is available at Nordstrom's and Sax Fifth Avenue, both online and off. Individual products range from $35 to $50, and there's a travel kit for $80.

We'll be testing these out over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for our results.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - Ashton Kutcher

What's wrong with this picture?

Wait... Don't tell me... Is it the Puma rip-off jogging jacket over the shirt and tie?

No.

Is it the fact that a celebrity was seen without wearing sunglasses?

No. But good guess.

Are you sure it's not the green jogging jacket?

It's not the green jogging jacket. I'll give you a hint. It's the beard and moustache. The wispy excuse for facial hair that's clinging to Ashton Kutcher's face. Did somebody punk him? Did Demi tell him it makes him looks older? Look, if you can't grow a beard, don't even try. You'll look silly. Case in point - Ashton Kutcher. Shave it. Shave it fast.
