August 2007 Wrap Up for Shaving Stuff

Electric Shavers
Another month with a lot of electric shaver activity. Bunch of posts on the Philips Norelco Moisture Shaving System including this comparison of the three models. We received the 8060X and it's charged and ready to go.

Also from Philips is the BodyGroom. This New York Times article talks about the genre-defining razor and how a little viral web 2.0 marketing can go a long way.

Reviews this month covered Ikhala Smooth Face Scrub and Ikhala Shaving Gel, products aimed at men with an African background who often have trouble with razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Next up are products from Musgo Real. Look for that at the start of September. In parallel we're checking out the latest from Old Spice. Look out ladies! Papa's taking some can't-miss cues from Bruce Campbell.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday picks included Eddie Vedder, John Lennon, and Michael Vick. Huh. There's an odd list of people.

Quick month this month of August. We're taking a few days to relax on the beach. Enjoy the last few days of summer and we'll see you all in September.

getTheCode.jpgHere's a cute little site from Remington to promote the Remington Code electric shaver. Submit your best pickup line and you could win. Too lazy to be original? Then click on over and vote on the best and worst. At the time of this writing, my favorite is

and my favorite of the worst is

"Baby, I'm an American Express lover. You shouldn't go home without me."
Ray, Miami, FL

Nice! See more at The Code.

The Remington Code "Young Man's Shaver" is $29.99.

Great Shaving Commercial from Turkey

Here's a fun, mostly work-safe TV commerical apparently for the Gillette Three Blade which answers the question of why some men carry a matchstick in their teeth. The answer may shock (or disgust) you.

(Quick post for today. We're out on vacation enjoying the last of the summer beach season.)

The new Braun Pulsonic is already available, but the media blitz is about to start. Come September you'll see TV and magazine ads, billboards, fireworks, skywriting. OK, I may have made that up, but the official launch is coming.

Here's a nice resource page set up by Bruan with tons of information about the new Pulsonic - For example, into the whole green movement?

Braun Pulsonic is the world's first shaver brand with an ENERGY STAR-qualified battery charger. Energy Star Logo Braun shaving systems feature Smart Plugs* that use 64 percent less energy than standard shavers that will result in real benefits for the environment.

(more here)

The Braun Pulsonic is now available in models from $208 to $235.

Badger Hair - A Primer

For those of you who aren't master shavers (myself included) you may be interested in the different types of badger hair used in high-end shaving brushes. In fact, you might be interested in knowing why badger hair is the preferred medium of choice.

Badger hair is different to many types of fur - like human hair it absorbs water and it is this characteristic that makes badger hair perfect for shaving brushes. [...] Water is the key element in a good shave and the more a brush can hold, the better the lather and shave will be.

Don't even think about using human hair for shaving, unless of course it's your own. OK, now on to the three gradations of badger hair:

Silver Tip - this is the highest quality of all. The finely graded and sorted pure badger hair is the softest, rarest and most expensive badger hair; with natural untrimmed silver tips, it is the highest quality available in shaving brushes worldwide.

Super Badger - this is the finer hair from the back of the badger, it is longer and softer than 'best' badger and, because it is finer, requires more hairs to fill a brush.

Best Badger - this is an excellent quality of pure badger hair. [...] The hair is harvested from the majority of the pelt, including the belly. It is generally darker in colour although the colours of individual hairs vary from grey and brown to black.

Isn't it silly that the "best badger" is considered the lowest quality in this ranking system? FYI - "best badger" is still great. "Best badger" badger-hair brushes may run you $60, but they'll last forever if you treat them right. Of course you could pay hundreds for Silver Tip, and if you've got the money, go for it.

Special thanks to RazorSharpMale for the quotes.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - Michael Vick

This week's Celebrity Facial Hair Friday pick is (former) Atlanta Falcon's quarterback Michael Vick. Now unless you avoid sports at all costs you know that Michael is in a bit of trouble for organizing dog fights and then betting on them. It's a sad footnote in this story that people seem to be arguing over which is worse.

Michael's most likely going to prison. And when he gets out, he's going to need an image change. Book yourself on Leno, Oprah, and Dr. Phil. Perhaps write a book. And shave that goatee. See, everyone knows the goatee means evil. Mr. Spock had a transporter accident, got a goatee, and was evil. Once the goatee was gone, all was forgiven.

My guess is Michael Vick will resurface in a year or two with clean shaven face and an apologetic story. Tune in then to find out.

Reader Question about Edge brand ActiveCare

edgeActiveCare.gifShavingStuff reader Tim wrote in a while ago with a question about the quiet disappearance of Edge brand ActiveCare products. I totally spaced on this (blaming it on the arrival of our newborn son) and have found out nothing. I did check our local Target on a recent diaper run and confirmed Tim's observation. Here's his question:

I have a shaving related question that I can't get an answer for. I noticed this weekend that I was unable to buy the Edge brand ActiveCare shaving cream anymore. It is no longer stocked at Target, Stop and Shop or CVS in my area. Has this been pulled from the market. It seems that all the stores in my area have gone back to the gel in a can stuff. Was there news about this that I missed on your site? When the products launched there was tons of information and news about it, when it gets pulled it is done silently.

Anyone able to answer Tim's question? Are ActiveCare products still around? If anyone has any info feel free to post it in the comments or send me an email. Thanks. And sorry for taking so long to get back to you Tim.

This Just In - Philips Norelco Moisturizing Shaving System 8060X

Norelco-8060X.jpgYou may have seen our previous posts on the new Philips Norelco Moisturizing Shaving System which comes in three models. Well, we just got one of these bad boys in and I am so excited to try it out. It looks awesome. Similar design as the Arcitec with the three floating heads, but the Moisture Shaving System is a wet/dry electric razor which dispenses moisturizing lotion as you shave. Now I have no excuse not to get a shaving mirror for the shower.

The top-end 8060X comes with the integrated charging and refill station seen in the picture to the right. (The other models have a mere manual process for refill the Nivea moisturizing cream.) The floating heads snap off and can be replacing with a sideburns clipper, and there's also a handy spot on the side of the charging stand to store the clipper when it's not in use.

For traveling there's a lycra and mesh travel bag (with pocket for the sideburns clipper) and a tiny stand so you don't have to bring the big charging stand.

So here's my question - with a product which looks this cool, why not give it a cool name? I love "Arcitec". Sounds high-tech. And like the arctic. And like that guy in the Matrix III - The Architect. I gots to shave me with one of those.

But the Moisture Shaving System? How about, the "Arcitec Wet/Dry"? Or the "Equitec"? Or the "Super Cool Shaving System 2000"? Ok, maybe I ought to leave the product naming to the pros.

The Philips Norelco Moisture Shaving System 8060X is $149.99.

Old Spice Spices it Up

BodySprayPhotoAfterHours.jpgWhat does an "old" brand like Old Spice do to "spice" things up a little? (See how clever I was there?) Well, they put out some new products, throw their ads up on YouTube, and send some samples out to the blog-o-sphere. Who's on top of web 2.0? And even though these particular products are exactly shaving-related, a brand as venerated as Old Spice deserves to be paid attention to.

Now, if you haven't seen the latest "Ahoy" commercial, watch it via YouTube above. Yes, that is Duran Duran's Hungry Like the Wolf sung by Bruce Campbell doing his best William Shatner in a 70s-inspired James Bond Vegas hang out. Hello, ladies. Damn! You know that guy smells irresistible. I just hope Old Spice has captured that smell in their new line of body sprays.

We'll be trying out their new "After Hours" scent, which promises

The purpose of this particular Old Spice scent is to make sure you don't come home alone.

Nice! Now where's my tux?

Stock Up Sale at RazorsDirect

razorsDirectLogo.jpgRazorsDirect is running their "Stock-Up" sale from now until September 2nd. Huge savings on men's razors such as Fusion, Mach 3, and Quattro. Huge savings on women's razors such as Venus, Quattro, and Intuition. The more you buy, the more you save. Is there a paradox in that statement?

Also, RazorsDirect is offering free shipping on orders in the US, and free shipping to military APO and FPO addresses.

"My only way to receive the type of razors I use while serving in Iraq."
Walter J., APO

Now I know, some of you will say you get the best shave of your life with a 2 cent "un-safety" razor and an old-school handle. Fine. Take your life into your own hands every morning. I'm sticking with a modern cartridge and a vibrating handle.

Celebrity Facial Hair Friday - John Lennon

This week's Celebrity Facial Hair Friday pick is the fab-ulous John Lennon. John, or rather the estate of John, has been in the news recently because John's solo songs have recently shown up on iTunes. Seems there was a long-standing trademark lawsuit between Apple, the computer company, and Apple, the Beatles recording company. Well, the interested parties have decided to give peace a chance, and try to turn a buck.

"John would have loved the fact that his music will now be available in a format suited to a new generation of listeners," Lennon's widow Yoko Ono said in a written statement.

Maybe he would have. Or maybe he would have thought all this lawyerly arguing was plain silly. Who knows?

But I do know was that John Lennon occasionally looked like Jesus. Crazy long hair and full beard. And at times he was clean shaven. And early on, he looked like every other bowl-cut Beatle. I like a guy who's willing to change his image on a regular basis. Too bad he hasn't been around for the last 27 years making more music.

Live shaving session with a Gillette Fusion Power

YouTube time! Here's a video from the German gadgets weblog Technoskop which shows a guy using the Gillette Fusion Power. I liked it because it shows some good brush techniques. If you're at all curious about applying shaving creams with a brush, check this video out. Also, if you're still wondering how to use that sixth blade on the back of the Fusion, here's a nice example. I wasn't as crazy about his actual shaving techniques though. I recommend rinsing your blade more often. Also, don't press so hard on your skin.

Now, I don't have any idea what this guy was saying, but it was the most relaxing German I've ever heard. The words for shaving in German would make a good night time lullaby.

Meet the Philips Norelco Moisturizing Shaving System

norelco8060X.jpgNot too long ago we took a look at the Philips Norelco Arcitec, a totally re-designed electric razor with three seemingly floating heads. Turns out the Arcitec was only half the plan. This snippet from a recent Philips Norelco press release explains:

"The idea of a one-size fits all shaver is just that: an idea," said Arjen Linders, vice president, marketing, Philips Norelco. "Different men have different shaving needs so we've redesigned our classic shavers to deliver meaningful innovation that addresses specific consumer needs -arcitec for the man who wants a meticulous shave on the face and neck and Moisturizing Shaving System for someone who wants his shaver to help promote healthy skin."

While the Arcitec is still based on the standard dry electric razor, the Moisturizing Shaving System can be used on a wet face (meaning in the shower!) and releases Nivea for Men moisturizing lotion on your freshly shaven skin to help condition and heal. This isn't the first lotion-dispensing razor Philips Norelco has made, but it is the first to follow the new floating head design.

The Philips Norelco Moisturizing Shaving System comes in three models: the 8020X for $79.99, 8040X for $99.99, and the 8060X for $149.99. What's the difference? Err... I knew you'd ask. I think the 8060X comes with a self-cleaning dock. Need to find out more. Hang on...

Nature Calls from Ritual

I surf. You surf. We all surf for ice cream. Or shaving. Here's what happens when you follow a few links - You come across something like Ritual brand shaving products. Innocuous enough at first, but wait - what's this? Nature Calls? That's interesting...
Just two drops of Nature Calls in your toilet prior to doing your business will obliterate all odor. This truly revolutionary, plant-extract-derived solution doesn't just cover up unpleasant smells, it eliminates them. The perfect way to kickoff your Triple S.

In my morning ritual the "S" they're talking about usually come last, but still, I wonder if it works. Honestly, I could use something like that now that I'm no longer single.

Ritual has an entire line of men's grooming products from sh!t, shower, to shave. Prices are all under $20 except the multi-pack kits.

Celebrity Facial Hair Wednesday - Eddie Vedder

eddieVedder.jpgThis week's Celebrity Facial Hair pick is grunge rocker Eddie Vedder, lead singer of the band Pearl Jam. Vedder was one of the pioneers of grunge rock, and now he's one of the final hold-outs. Still sporting the scraggly beard and long hair (although to his credit he's mixed it up throughout the years).

Always current, always political, Vedder is involved in another scandal these days, but not one of his making. Seems Vedder and the boys were playing Lollapalooza in Chicago when they sang some lyrics that might make the establishment a little uneasy. There's nothing wrong with that though, right? Free speech an all? Apparently AT&T, who was webcasting the event, thought otherwise and censored some of the lyrics. Boo!

We at ShavingStuff are all about free speech. Imagine if we weren't allowed to talk about shaving? This would be a pretty boring blog.

Babies Like Beards!

babyBook.jpgAbout a month ago the ShavingStuff studios had a different kind of "This Just In..." event. We welcomed a little baby boy into our lives. Our first. So, as most new parents do, we're busy diapering, feeding, and learning.

Here's an interesting tidbit from page 460 of The Baby Book on infant vision:

Because of their preference for light-dark contrast, babies often pay more attention to the male face, especially if it has a beard or mustache.

Couldn't have asked for a better news. Papa's got you covered little man.

New York Times on the Rise of the Philips Norelco BodyGroom

nytimesBodyGroom.jpgThe New York Times had an article last Sunday on the rise of the Philips Norelco Bodygroom. Seems a year ago before launched the subject of men's hair grooming anywhere other than the head was taboo.

Today, the Bodygroom is one of at least four products in what’s seen as a distinct and fast-growing category; nearly 250,000 body-hair trimmers have been bought in the United States in the last year, according to NPD data (which does not count Wal-Mart). “Nobody was talking about this category,” Olstrom says. “Now it’s completely out in the open.”

Click on over to the New York Times article for a few pearls of wisdom from the marketing geniuses behind "Robe Guy". And make sure you see the new "Follicle Phil" video if you haven't already.

The Philips Norelco Bodygroom is $34.99.

Review of Ikhala Shaving Gel

ikhalaShavingGel.jpgDay two of two in our mini Ikhala products review. Today we're talking about Ikhala Shaving Gel. If you missed our post yesterday about Ikhala Smooth Face Scrub or our post from a while ago about the social mission behind Ikhala, be sure to take a minute and catch up. Ready? OK...

Ikhala Shaving Gel is a clear gel which works itself up into a slightly sudsy lather. Doesn't feeling drying like soap, but the lather does approximate soap bubbles. The shave with Ikhala is good. Not the closest I've ever had, but I think that's actually preferable if you're suffering from frequent in-grown hairs. (Someone please correct me if they've heard otherwise.) And the scent of Ikhala Shaving Gel is like the cleanest swimming pool you've ever swam in. Not one of those over-chlorinated pools with lots of kids. I'm talking about your own private pool overlooking a mountain range on a clear sunny day. (Hey - you try describing smells sometime. I'm serious. This stuff smells like an awesome pool.)

As with all Ikhala products, Ikhala Shaving Gel is formulated for the African male who occasionally struggles with ingrown hairs and razor bumps. For more info check out their website at

Ikhala Shaving Gel is $14 for a 6oz tube.

Review of Ikhala Smooth Face Scrub

ikhalaScrub.jpgWorking through quite a backlog of shaving products. Got samples of Ikhala from Kevin Jackson of the Chicago men's grooming store Manifold back in December and I'm embarrassed to say we're just getting to them now.

First up, a reminder. Ihkala is "a luxury skin care line developed specifically for men of African descent." They've also got a great commitment to people. A percentage of sales of Ikhala goes to help rural South African farmers who provide some of the ingredients. See our original post for more info.

Razor bumps and ingrown hairs occur in a higher percentage of African-American males than others. Ikhala's Smooth Face Scrub is one great way to combat that. Exfoliation

[...] deep cleanses pores and gently exfoliates by removing dead cells, leaving the skin looking clean, healthy and revitalized

I found Ikhala's Smooth Face Scrub to work great. I'm not their target demographic, so I'm really not best suited to make a judgment. But I liked that the grit in Ikhala's scrub wasn't too coarse, so I didn't feel like I was scratching my face. Also, the smell is totally unique in facial products I've tried. Kind of reminded my of a nice old leather sofa. Seriously.

Ikhala's Smooth Face Scrub is $18 for a 5oz tube.

SheFinds' HeFinds Friday

The site SheFinds covers women's trends. What's cool, what's hot, and nothing in between. And on Fridays they often post a special HeFinds Guy Friday because hey, it's not just women who want to look good.

A few weeks ago they posted five "tips from Anthony Sosnick, the grooming guru behind Anthony Logistics for Men". We've reviewed Anthony Logistics for Men and found them to be pretty darn good. A great way to transition from the drug-store world of shaving into the specialty world.

The kit above is The Perfect Shave from Anthony Logistics for Men. $50 gets you an "8 oz Glycolic Facial Cleanser, 2 oz Pre-Shave Oil, 2.5 oz Shave Cream, and a 2.5 oz After Shave Balm, packaged in a sporty, black, mesh dopp bag." No too shabby. In fact downright trendy.

Special thanks to Laura at Shirt Snob for sending this in.
