Gizmodo's Adventures in Hairlessness

Gizmodo recently ran a shaving-related article entitled How to Turn Your Body Into A Hairless Wonderland With Gadgets. Their weapons of choice - The Mangroomer, the Philips Bodygroom, and the Flowbee. Mangroomer - all over that. Blogged about it yesterday. Philips Bodygroom - covered it. "Follicle" Phil rules. Flowbee - that's a new one to me.
[...] you probably saw this on late-night TV ads. If you're not familiar, the Flowbee is a combination vacuum cleaner and (head) hair trimmer. Both plug into the wall (you can opt to use your own vacuum and save a few bucks on the order) and work together to simultaneously cut and clean up the mess.

Clearly I'm not watching enough late night TV.

Full the full write-up (but sadly no before and after pix) click on over to Gizmodo.

ShavingSupplies.com - Shave Center of the Internet

Came across this site recently in our world wide web travels - ShavingSupplies.com - which should be interesting to all you old-school straight-razor shavers.
We hope you enjoy the extensive selection of shaving products all of which are top quality and reasonably priced. We are the exclusive retailer of "Eagle Brand" straight razors from Thiers Issard in France and also feature many razors from DOVO and MERKUR of Solingen, Germany.

Not only do they bill themselves as the "Shave Center of the Internet", but they also claim to be "The KnifeCenter of the InterNet". And if you're in need of a little extra defense, click on over to their SecurityCenter section and stock up on Tactical Flashlights, Hand Cuffs, and Pepper Spray.

Shave and a hand cuff? Two bits.

removingHair.jpgWe recently learned of Removing Hair.co.uk, a site dedicated to all forms of hair removal. Articles cover topics from shaving to plucking, electrolysis, laser, waxing, and more.

RemovingHair.co.uk was formed to offer a unique reference point on eliminating unsightly hair. We show you the best ways to remove it and keep it at bay. Our concern was that there was no single UK resource for interesting features and practical advice on this subject. Our features and articles are written by professional journalists and experts - who have a particular interest, or a background in this area.

I was particularly intrigued by a hair removal technique called sugaring. Turns out the ancient Greeks and Egyptians used to make a paste of sugar, lemon, and water and use it like wax. Here are the proportions:

2 cups white processed sugar
¼ of a cup of water
¼ of a cup of lemon juice

(I think that may be the first recipe we've ever posted on ShavingStuff.)

Click on over to Removing Hair.co.uk and check it out. And if you've got feedback or an idea for an article, send them your thoughts here.

Quick and Easy Fathers' Day Gifts at Best4Men.com

best4men.jpgSo you want to get dad a shaving upgrade but you don't want to wade through 100 user comments at Amazon or 50 reviews at (ahem) ShavingStuff. Let someone else do the winnowing at Best4Men.

Shopping at Best4Men.com is a breeze. When you visit, you're not going to find dozens of choices, all claiming to be the right one for you. Instead, there's just one of everything, carefully and painstakingly selected for each category. Driven by the thought that "sometimes 100 choices are 99 too many", Brett Thorson, founder and CEO of Best4Men, LLC, wanted to make it simple for today's man to find the right grooming product.

Shaving Cream - Hydroplane by Billy Jealousy. Pre-shave oil - Anthony Logistics For Men. Still need a gift idea? Click on over to their Gift Ideas page where you can choose a pre-made bundle or BYOK. (That's Build Your Own Kit, for the acronym-challenged.) Shipping is a flat $7, or free for orders over $75. Fathers' Day is less than two weeks away. Start shopping!

Crap from the Future - a New Yorker Cartoon

The New Yorker. You know the magazine. You know you should be reading it. But it's weekly. And it piles up quicker than junk mail. You find yourself paging through it reading just the cartoons. And you justify your subscription that way. Because they're intelligent and witty. But I digress...

Here's a cute little cartoon from Kim Warp entitled Crap from the Future (A razor with many superfluous parts.). Published in The New Yorker on May 14, 2007. Chuckle, chortle, choo.

Wired magazine's monthly Artifacts from the Future is often more sharp and satirical, but this razor-related cartoon will do. Who knows, maybe Gillette or Schick has already patented it.

Trump Magazine's Best Ever Shaving Stuff 2007

Of course Donald Trump has his own magazine. In fact, he probably has like 10, but they're so exclusive that us regular folk only know about this one - Trump Magazine. And while I'll either be launching JetStuff.com or YachtStuff.com in the fall, today we're going to focus on our bread and butter - shaving.

So who made the cut in Trump Magazine's Best Ever 2007 awards? Well, front and center is our good friend Baxter of California. Also representin' is Anthony Logistics for Men, movie star (not) Jack Black, Moulton Brown, and a few others.

It looks like The Donald, or his writers, may actually have some taste. We've reviewed many of Baxter of California's products in the past quite favorably. Too bad Baxter can't do something for the hideous comb-over. Stylist in a Bottle, anyone?

Mens German Challenge

mensChallenge.jpgMichael from the German men's grooming site www.DerGepflegteMann.de recently wrote to let us know about the site Mens-Challenge.com. There seems to be some sort of challenge, involving men. And jet skis. I'm not sure what else. The site's in german.

But there is this rather hot woman who shows up just about everywhere you click. She reminds me of Gillette's Cassandra from their Fusion website. And if women aren't your thing, there's an Am-I-Hot-Or-Not section with pictures of men for you to vote on.

The site is sponsored by Gillette, Braun, Head and Shoulders, and Wellaflex, and has a section on the new Braun Pulsonic which had a big press event in New York yesterday. (More on that in future posts.) Again in german though.

Some of you may want to jump directly to the men, but I was stuck on the woman to the right. I have no idea what she's saying, but german never sounded so good. I did make out the words Porsche Cayenne, and Michael confirmed that there is a contest associated with this website where you can win one.

I did learn one word through. "Mehr". As in, click here for mehr.

The Libertarian View on Shaving

lib_shaving_cream.gifHere's an interesting article I stumbled across recently by Jeffrey A. Tucker entitled The Shaving Cream Racket. In it Mr. Tucker makes the case that the greatest hoax perpetrated on man is making us believe we actually need shaving cream. The basic argument is this - shaving cream weakens our face, thus creating a market for all the post-shave/after-shave healing products which we need for nicks, cuts, and redness.

I suppose it's a decent argument, however I think Mr. Tucker is starting from a bad premise. Namely, bad shaving cream. That stuff you buy in the aerosol can at the local drug store for $1.99 ain't going to cut it. In fact, it's going to cut you. There are some major differences in the way the shaving creams we've tested for this site set up your whiskers for shaving. Some lubricate well. Some help stand your beard hairs up. Some do all that and more.

In my (humble) opinion, Mr. Tucker starts to loose his credibility with this sentence:

There are many thing that are true – the state is a parasite on society, private property would solve most social problems, rock music is tedious and stupid – but are nonetheless not generally known or applied.

Hmm... I appreciate opposing views, but it sounds like you've got a little anger you need to deal with. I suggest a good shave.
