New Site -

SlyBaldShadowSmall.JPG.jpgJust got word of a new site - Here's a repost of their mission statement:

Sly Bald Guys was started to create a community to give bald men, balding men, those that are bald by choice an entertaining and informative place to congregate on the web. The mission of Sly Bald Guys is to become the leading site for men to find information regarding being bald, build confidence about being bald, express how proud they are to be bald, and build the best and largest bald community in the world.

Do I need a mission statement?

SlyBaldGuys covers all topics related to being bald, including head-shaving. Plenty of activity in the forums if you're looking for a new crowd to hang with. There's also growing list of product reviews which is mostly about shaving products, although the occasional music review or outdoor footwear piece seems to sneak in. Plus, and this is something near and dear to my heart - a blog. Subscribe to the bald blog and banish your blahs. (Yeah, I know - skip the alliteration and work on your mission statement.)

Josh Shockley's Antishave Adventures Continues

Time to check in with Josh Shockley over at Antishave 2006. Remember him? He's the guy who's not shaving for a year. Read up from last post if you need a refresher.

So summer's in full swing. It's hot. Must be tough to have a full beard. Here's Josh's comments from last month:

It's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be, though it can be pretty annoying at times. The warm weather really doesnt bother me too much. The beard acts like a radiator. In the heat, it keeps my face cool by taking the brunt of the warmpth. In the cool, it keeps my face warm by locking in my body's natural body heat (much like a winter coat).

Keep it up Josh. It only gets colder from here. Unless that bit about global warming is true.

Want more of the Antishave? Click on over to Antishave on MySpace and become a friend.

July 24, 2006 For Old-School Shaving

It's Monday morning and you've just finished going through your email. Not quite ready for work yet? Here's another shaving site to check out if you're in a surfing mood -, again sent in by ShavingStuff reader Robert. Don't be swayed by its pre-dot-com design; the site actually contains a wealth of shaving information. Lots of pictures of old razors. Lots of links to shaving resources. Lots of broken links and spelling mistakes too, but don't get too discouraged if a click gets you to a dead end.

My favorite page was the one devoted to Gillette's Centennial, celebrated in 2001. Great info on their first products, including a picture of their first razor and a diagram from the original patent. How cool is that? And if you can get by the annoying pop-ups, the message boards are pretty good. Not much traffic but just about all posting have quality answers. Enjoy. And happy Monday.

July 10, 2006 - International Shaving Collectibles

shaveworld.gifShavingStuff reader Robert wrote in with a couple websites to check out. The first is,

...the largest, most comprehensive website for the collecting and preservation of implements and historical records related to the art of shaving.

And they're not kidding. Want to see 683 pictures of different brands and models of razor blades? You bet you do. Especially when there's this razor with Mickey Mouse on it. Hey kids - playing with shiny, sharp objects is fun! Or how about 1297 pictures of safety razors? Take that Wikipedia.

The site requires a login, which is kind of a bummer, but no doubt it's how they keep their quality so high. Definitely go through the registration dance. It's worth it just to browse the photos. If you're feeling a little more gregarious, click on over the to forums and discuss. (Sadly, the forums don't look too happenin'.)

And if you become totally sucked in, clear your calendar this October for the 3rd International Shaving Collectibles Meeting in beautiful West Chester, Ohio - October 21-22. $64 gets you in the door. ($75 if you register after July 31st.) "Spouses, at a reduced fee, are encouraged to attend." Yeah, I think we'd be testing the bonds of our marriage if I dragged ShavingStuff wife to an event like that. But, judging by the photos from the 2005 Shaving Collectibles Meeting, there's some swanky food and wine. And tons of shaving stuff.

The Latest Product Reviews from

hslogo_big.pngIt's been a while since we checked in with, and in that time they've posted several new product reviews, including Ultra Shave, Sharp's Kid Glove shave gel, Billy Jealousy Hydroplane Shave Cream, Gillette Fusion, and plain old Baby Oil. These reviews are all from the head-shaver perspective, so they've got a slightly different set of criteria than we at ShavingStuff look for, however there's great info for beard-shavers too. I especially like that they note the "gunk factor" with each product. Taking extra time to rinse goopy shaving cream out of your razor can get pretty darn annoying. I may have to start incorporating that factor into my reviews.

Josh Shockley's Adventures In Not Shaving

Josh Shockley had a yearning question last year - what would it be like if I didn't shave for a whole year? Would it itch in the hot summer months? Would he even make it? Would anyone even care?

Turns out the web provides and audience for just about anything. So today, on a website devoted to shaving, we're happy to bring you Josh's website Antishave 2006 devoted to not shaving. The rules are simple:

  1. No facial shaving from January 1, 2006 to January 1, 2007.
  2. At the request of my beautiful girlfriend, trimming will be permitted but only to shape the mane.
  3. I can shave my neck to keep it nice looking.
  4. A picture will be posted weekly.
  5. The picture will be taken in the same part of my house, and it will be of the same part of my body (my face).

Josh is taking full advantage of all the web has to offer, from Blogspot, to YouTube, to Flickr. There are tons of ways to watch and track his progress. He's about six months into his ordeal, and looking, well, unshaven. But keep going Josh! We'll check in with you a little later and see how those summer months are treating you.

Special thanks to Darren Barefoot for calling attention to this anti-shaving experiment.

USA to Host World Beard and Moustache Championship in 2009

philolsenbyandrewbuscard.jpgAlmost a year ago we wrote about the then upcoming World Beard and Moustache Championship to be held Berlin in October of 2005. Kind of fell off our radar (shame on us!), but big thanks to ShavingStuff reader David who wrote in recently. First of all we should congratulate all the winners, especially those in the Schnauzbart Freestyle category. Totally Xtreme Schnauzbarts! Secondly, we're excited to announce that the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships will be held right here in the good ol' US of A. USA! USA! Well, actually Anchorage, Alaska. Which is still USA. But getting out there.

And how is team USA preparing to defend their home turf? Check out Beard Team USA's blog for up to date info. Phil Olsen, self-appointed team captain, will keep you informed on all the latest news and tips for the upcoming showdown. Plus, if you feel the need for some pre-world championship training, you can enter in these upcoming events for a dry run to the big day.

Gentlemen, start your beards.
