Win a full size The Art Of Shaving Kit from Foreman

There's only one thing that can make The Art of Shaving even better, and that's when it's free. If you haven't shaved with this brand's products, you haven't elevated your shave to an art form.

So here's what I recommend. Click on over to Foreman's blog 4mind4body, and check out the contest they're running. All you have to do is sign up for their mailing list, tell them about your current shaving habits, and then promise to tell them how much you love The Art of Shaving once you win. And trust me, you won't have any difficulty doing that last part.

Contest ends Monday January 12th, so you bests get a-clickin'!

Close Shave - A Photographer's Study Of Shaving

Close_Shave_Cover_Peter.jpgWe first learned about Kent Waddington and his photographic treatise on shaving two years ago. At that time Kent had four years of shaving photo essays under his belt and was starting to get some recognition for his shaving work.

Well, we're pleased to report that Kent is still going strong, and he's back with a new website, his first series of a woman shaving (her legs, cheeky monkeys), and a book!

After a very long delay, we are pleased to announce the launch of Close SHAVE - the website for your viewing pleasure. Contained within our many pages of cyberspace you will find dozens of colour and black & white images taken from our ongoing shave series which started about seven years ago. Throughout that time we have worked with models, wanna-be-models and non-models, in private and in public spaces both in North America and Europe.

Back in 2006 I described the site as guilt-free shaving porn. But that's selling it short. While there are a lot of people shaving in odd public places, there are also the touching moments where a shave is a symbol of something much larger. For example, John and Peter shows a moment we hope never to have to experience - a son shaving his hospitalized father.

Keep up the great work Kent! We look forward to seeing what comes next.

Shaving Tips From Moroccan Street Shavers

Here's a cool article from AskMen.com entitled Shaving Tips From Moroccan Street Shavers. Who would have thought that Moroccan street shavers would hold the secret to great shaves, but then again David Blaine street magician holds the secret to levitation. (How does he do it?)

Anyway, there are some great tips for great shaves here. Some info you'll know. Some you won't. Like this tip, which was news to me:

Instead of stretching the skin just before the passage of the blade -- "a common mistake," he told me -- he ensured that the area being shaven remained loose by gently pushing the skin on my cheek toward the blade with his free hand, thus creating a little wave or mound of skin to shave over. Doing so prevents the beheading of protuberances, anesthetic cuts and bleeding dots.

Fascinating. I usually pull my skin taught when shaving. I think I'll try loose for a little while and see what happens. You learn something new every day!

Happy Movember!

You may remember last year around this time we covered a little underground global shaving movement called Movember. Well it's back, baby, and in full world-spanning force!

At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo (Australian slang for moustache), raising money and awareness along the way for men's health and the fight against prostate cancer.

And ShavingStuff reader Daniil has graciously volunteered to go down under and provide on-site reports of the men and their 'staches. Actually he's spending a year in New Zealand for other reasons, but he did send us this great photos of Mo-mite billboards. "Mo-mite - because my upper lip deserves the best." Never heard of Mo-mite? Me neither. Think of it as invigorating moustache spread.

For a long time now, many have thought it's the B-vitamins in Mo-mite that stimulate mo-follicles. Others have thought it's the unique blend of yeast and herbs. Some reckon it's just a load of bull. It's hard to be certain. All we know for sure is that it tastes good and as long as it keeps our mo's soft, voluptuous and full of shine, it's got to be a good thing. Just like Movember.

Mmm, mmm! A little mo-mite for the stache. A little vegemite for the mouth. I love Movember down under!

Hans Langseth and the Longest Beard Ever

hans.jpgHere's another shaving historical gem I came across recently while wandering through the darker sections of the net. Ever wonder who had the longest beard ever, and how long was it? Meet Hans Langseth:

The longest beard ever was grown by Hans Langseth of Norway, whose whiskers stretched an incredible 5.33 m (17 6 in) when measured upon his death in Kensett, Iowa, in 1927. The beard was presented to the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, in 1967.

Can you imagine Mr. Smithson receiving a 17 and a half foot detached beard for his collection? My guess is Hans's benefactors thought they were talking to the Guinness World Record people, and old James was too kind to correct their mistake. Blech!

Baxter Finley - A New Blog From Baxter of California

bwbaxter_f_4.jpgBlogging. It's all the rage. All the kids are doing it. Or so I'm told. I should ask my one year old son.

Anyway, we'd like to welcome a new shaving blog to the the blogging community - Baxter Finley from Baxter of California. Could Baxter of Finley be the same Baxter as Baxter of California? Why yes!

A visionary, Baxter Finley founded his men's grooming line in 1965 - perhaps the very first skincare line created exclusively for men. This year we said goodbye to Baxter Finley, but remember him for his forward thinking, dedication to his profession, and his kind, gentle disposition.

Mr. Finley may be gone, but Baxter lives on. So add Baxter Finley to your daily blog roll and get the latest on shaving, style, and substance.
