South Central Alaska Beard and Moustache Club

SCAKBMCpatch.jpgAlaska's been getting quite a bit of attention recently, what with the surprise pick of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate. Here's a little slice of Alaska which deserves its time in the limelight. It's the South Central Alaska Beard and Moustache Club, and it's gearing up to host the World Beard and Moustache Championships on May 23rd, 2009. That means construction's already well underway on the bearded toboggan run, the track for the mustache relay race, and of course the giant goatee slalom. Nobody's expecting opening ceremonies to beat China's recent masterpiece, but let's just say there may be a couple of guys flying around the rooftop suspended by their handlebars.

Our club was founded in 2003 to extend the annual Mr. Fur Face competition at the Miner's and Trapper's Ball into a year-round celebration of competition and comradery. Members include former Mr. Fur Face title holders , World Champions, and world class competitors.

Here's what I can infer from the South Central Alaska Beard and Moustache Club. There are a lot of beard and moustache clubs in Alaska. There's the North Central Alaska Beard and Moustache Club, the Southeast Alaska Beard and Moustache Club, and who could forget the Due West Alaska Beard and Moustache Club. I hear you can see Russia from their main offices.

Anyway, start planning your trip now for the World Beards in '09 in Anchorage. Now where are my Michelle Shocked tapes? And where can I get me one of those patches?

Getting The Proper Beard Length

beard-line.jpgHere's a seldom mentioned topic which you need to get right - beards, how low can you go? Getting the right looking beard means the difference between respectable and unabomber. Thankfully Esquire magazine has hired the etchers from the front page of the Wall Street Journal to bring you this proper beard length diagram.

It helps to think of your face as a map, your beard an invading army. If you don't control the front line, there's really no reason to stay in the fight. Stopped too close to the jawbone (line a), a beard makes you look uptight.

Also, think of your razor as a peacekeeper, not a sword. And shaving cream as liberating cream. Whiskers just want their freedom. We'll stand down once the hairs stand up. Actually, we'd rather have the hairs stay down. It's the fact that they keep standing up that we have to stay. Wow, we could be shaving in this region for like 100 years.

Cash In On The Latest Promotion At Best4Men

best4men_02.jpgOur buds over at Best4Men have got a new promotion going on featuring some of our favorite brands. Here are the details, and I quote (because I'm lazy):

  1. Purchase $75 or more (applies to all products) and receive a FREE tube of Razor Rinse by Ritual ($17 value).
  2. Buy any two products by John Allan and receive a FREE 2 fl oz bottle of John Allan's BODYWASH.
  3. Buy two Hair Raiser Follicle Restorer treatments by Billy Jealousy and receive a third one for FREE ($75 value).

What's cool about this promotion is there's no promo code to remember, and the free items don't even need to be in your cart. What could be simpler? Can't remember if it's PROMO08 or PROMO_08? Guess what? It's neither!

We've recently gave some very positive reviews to Ritual and John Allan's shaving products, so here's a great way to check these lines out if you're looking to step up your shaving game.

Gifts for Dads in the Military

best4men.jpgOnly a few days left to take advantage of Military Appreciation month at Best4Men. Here are the details:

May is Military Appreciation month, so let's thank those who serve for our better tomorrow. Use offer code Mil08 and receive 20% off any purchase of $50 or more when shipping to a US military installation anywhere in the world.

Have you seen Best4Men's Men's Ultimate Grooming Toolkit ($250)? Um, that kicks ass. Might be better for a military dad at home, but it also might make your father the envy of his platoon.

Also from Best4Men:

As a special thank you this month, we will include an exclusive "Live in Love" leather bracelet from Lucky Brand Jeans Company in every purchase over $35. These bracelets are very popular and are worn by people of all ages - a cool, stylish alternative to those rubber "Live Strong" bracelets. (While supplies last!)

Schick and YouTube Pick a Winner!

A big congratulations to Eric Michael Hopper, winner of the Schick "Get Experimental" contest on YouTube. Eric's winner entry was "Clean Up Your Act", which follows the life of an aspiring singer and his feline companion. Personally, I think the cat stole the show.

I have to say - advertisers on Madison Avenue won't be fearing for their day jobs. The armchair director in me says they're all about 15 seconds too long. They're fun, and they incorporate the Schick Quattro Titanium, but they all have an amateur feel. Don't get me wrong - there's some great work here. My personal favorite - A Hobbit's Tale to Smoothness - is worthy of Peter Jackson short. Just not feature length. (I know, everyone's a critic.)

Checking Back In On The Search for the Next Phenom

I'll admit it. I have a special place in my heart for juggling. I used to juggle. (Nerd alert!) Balls, pins, even handkerchiefs. Perhaps I should have tried razors.

This kid jeremy923 kicks some major ass on Gillette's Search for the Next Phenom contest. What's he got in the air? Five balls? Seven balls? Gee, that's a hell of a lot more impressive than that kid who made two free throws in a row from the end of his driveway. Sorry, not that exciting, free-throwing-kid. Learn to juggle.

A quick runner-up mention to the guy who shoots a bow and arrow using his legs and hits a moving target while spinning a basketball. Definitely the most unique thing I've seen in the contest. I don't think he's going to win, but he's definitely cornered the market.

Now, back to that juggling kid. If only he were old enough to shave... He'd be a shoo-in.

Gillette Presents The Search for the Next Phenom

A couple days ago we blogged about the Gillette Trickstars 08 contest on YouTube where your video of you being tricky could win you fame and fortune. Or maybe a Phenom. Turns out Trickstars is a European contest. But fear not, citizens of North America. The Search for the Next Phenom is for you!

Yes, we interrupt this normally scheduled Celebrity Facial Hair Friday to bring you not one but three celebrities - Roger Federer, Tiger Woods, and Thierry Henry. And this time, it's personal.

Create a video of 90 seconds or less showcasing your skill in a ball sport. Your video may include the biggies--basketball, baseball, soccer, football, golf, tennis--the lesser obvious ones-- volleyball, water polo, cricket, rugby, croquet--and even the fooseballs and Super Balls of the world. You can kick it, throw it, shoot it, catch it, juggle it, dribble it, heck do a dance with it if you like. If you're phenomenal enough, you could win.

What could you win? A cool 30 grand. Or a Blu-Ray DVD player. Or a 42" plasma. Or more. You've got until May 20th to upload your video, so start practicing. Based on the videos that have already been submitted, you've still got plenty of chances to win.

(A word to all you bowlers out there - don't include any cuts in your videos. Show me three strikes on three lanes in a single cut. Then I'll be impressed. Otherwise, I ain't buying it.)
