Josh Shockley's Adventures In Not Shaving

Josh Shockley had a yearning question last year - what would it be like if I didn't shave for a whole year? Would it itch in the hot summer months? Would he even make it? Would anyone even care?

Turns out the web provides and audience for just about anything. So today, on a website devoted to shaving, we're happy to bring you Josh's website Antishave 2006 devoted to not shaving. The rules are simple:

  1. No facial shaving from January 1, 2006 to January 1, 2007.
  2. At the request of my beautiful girlfriend, trimming will be permitted but only to shape the mane.
  3. I can shave my neck to keep it nice looking.
  4. A picture will be posted weekly.
  5. The picture will be taken in the same part of my house, and it will be of the same part of my body (my face).

Josh is taking full advantage of all the web has to offer, from Blogspot, to YouTube, to Flickr. There are tons of ways to watch and track his progress. He's about six months into his ordeal, and looking, well, unshaven. But keep going Josh! We'll check in with you a little later and see how those summer months are treating you.

Special thanks to Darren Barefoot for calling attention to this anti-shaving experiment.

Mariah Carey's Billion Dollar "Legs of a Goddess" Commitment

I'm sure you all remember last year's Gillette Venus Vibrance Legs of a Goddess winner Angela McNeany, the Drake law student whose life has undoubtedly changed dramatically due to her current reign. But just like Ms. America, you only get one year of fame. Time to start looking for a replacement. And who better to help in the search than leggy pop star Mariah Carey, who conveniently has a new album and tour to promote. According to the all-Mariah website MariahDaily.com,

Mariah was honored by Gillette for having the "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess" and a sixteen-foot high replica of her legs was unveiled in a ceremony held at the Radio City Music Hall on May 30, 2006.

(Hmm... "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess". Maybe it's time I retire Celebrity Facial Hair Friday and start a new weekly special.)

But here's the best part, according to SFGate's Daily Dish:

Mariah Carey has insured her legs for $1 billion after agreeing to front shaving giant Gillette's Legs of a Goddess campaign.

One billion dollars! Now lest you think this is a fluke, turns out celebrities do this all the time. For a short history on insuring famous body parts, and a debunking of J. Lo's billion dollar booty, click on over to this article from BankRate.com. Oddly enough I couldn't find anywhere on the site where I could insure my valuable facial hair. Hey - if I lose my five o'clock shadow, how will I review products for this site?

May Wrap-Up

Can't believe another month has gone by. This May we had three reviews - Baxter of California (awesome!), Zia for Men (great, but liked the first set better, and Billy Jealousy's Fuzzy Logic Shampoo. Hey, you send it, we'll review it.

It was also a great month for humorous shaving websites. If you haven't checked out NoScruf.org or ShaveEverywhere.com, you are missing some serious web-lore.

We also had our very first ShavingStuff Pop Quiz. Match the razor with the car of the same name. I hope you enjoyed it. I know I did.

Friday Facial Hair celebs included Hugh Jackman (shave it), David Spade (shave it), Richard Schiff (save it), and Emiliano Zapata (save it). It was Cinco De Mayo that day, and I try to be current.

In June we're expecting another shipment of products from Baxter of California, so stay tuned for the next review of that. Plus, Father's Day is coming up. Lots of specials to announce. And we'll take a look a guy who's taking a year off from shaving and blogging about it. Hmm... maybe he just hasn't found this site. Hope his trackbacks are working.

Gillette's Growing (and Shrinking) Pains

Gillette_Logo_Blue.gifCouple of news items in recent days relating to the fallout of Gillette's acquisition by Procter and Gamble. First, the Gillette packaging plant in Devens, MA will be closed and relocated, causing around 100 workers to lose their jobs. From the Lowell Sun:

The "pack to order" operation, which caters to retailers that need special packaging or displays for promotional reasons, will be relocated to Greensboro, N.C., said Gillette spokesman Eric Kraus.

And on the opposite side of the org chart, Gillette CEO Jim Kilts is throwing in the towel, although

To qualify for his full bonus, he will remain as P&G “vice-chairman” until October to “oversee” the integration of Gillette into its new parent company.

You don't want to know how much money he's going to make by phoning it in for the next 5 months. But if you're a glutton for pain you can read the estimate in this Boston Herald article.

What's the lesson in all of this? It's good to be CEO. It's bad to be a temporary employee. P&G - you'll be receiving my resume for the newly open Chief Executive position. Why yes, I do have experience in the shaving industry...

Darren Barefoot's Adventures In Shaving

Meet Darren Barefoot - blogger, shaver, experimenteur. Darren's recent project was to perform a side-by-side comparison between the new 5-bladed Gillette Fusion and the classic 2-bladed Bic Twin Select. In a piece entitled How Many Razors Blades Do I Really Need?, Darren shaves one side of his face with each. All is documented with pre-and post-shave photos, including some high-level whiteboarding sessions. (Warning - math) Read up and comment.

For those of you who are impatient, we'll cut to the chase:

Conclusions? After one shave, there’s little reason to use five blades. Maybe, over time, the cheap two-blade razor would irritate your skin more? Regardless, I think I’ll just stick with my three blades.

Nice work Darren. And for all the people who say the Fusion is expensive, check out the cost of Claritin in the receipt of Darren's purchase. Next up - the left side of Darren's face will take Claritin, and the right side will take a generic Benedryl knock-off.
