Walmart Soundcheck and the new Gillette Fusion

logo_always.gifWe're only weeks away from the launch of the Gillette Fusion, which will coincide with the Superbowl on Feb 5th, and here's the first inkling of the upcoming media blitz which will surely come. The Gillette Fusion is sponsoring Walmart's new Soundcheck promotion -

a new, original music performance series dedicated to bringing exclusive, cutting-edge and popular music content to customers both in stores and online at Walmart.com

If you're in a Walmart, head on over the the HDTV wall (as if you weren't going there anyway) and you'll see performances by known and emerging artists in glorious high-def, as well as promotions for the new Gillette Fusion. If you're on a computer, click on over to soundcheck.walmart.com to see those same perforamces in slightly less glorious streaming video, as well as promotions for the new Gillette Fusion. Sorry Mac users (including me), Soundcheck is Internet Explorer only. Somebody tell me if Yellowcard is any good.

Kristan Bromley - British Bob Skeleton Champion

Oh baby, have I got Olympic fever. I've always loved the winter olympics more than the summer. More speed. Whether is screaming down a mountain or careening down an ice chute, the winter olympics are all about going fast over the ice and snow. And this year I'll be taking time out from rooting for team USA to cheer for Kristan Bromley, sponsored by our good friends over at King of Shaves. Excuse me - that's Kristan Bromley Ph D.

32 year old Kristan Bromley from Bath is the current World Cup and European Bob Skeleton Champion, winning five out of the seven World Cup events in 2004. He is very hopeful of winning a British medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. This would be one of only six Gold medals ever won by Britain in the winter Olympics, which began in 1924. The King of Shaves sponsorship deal will enable Kristan to develop his Skeleton bobsleigh and remain on track in his quest to win the event.

Read more here. And while you're there, check out the Flash game where you can pretend to sled like a champ. I landed in a tree the first time I tried, but the next time I finished in style. Maybe I can get Gillette or Schick to sponsor me at the olympics...

New York Facial Hair Patterns and Shaving Trends

newyork.jpgA ShavingStuff reader from the New York photo studio The Green Room writes in

here in the birthplace of all trends and items of cultural interest, New York City, most trend-setting men DON'T shave every day, nor do they shave their entire face; in fact, many have a customized routine of mixing a blade shave with an electric one, letting facial hair grow in one place while keeping it clean in others. One thing that's definitely OUT is the goatee (PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!): not one of the people you will see on the following sites sports one: http://www.ambrel.net/, http://www.lastnightsparty.com/, http://www.thecobrasnake.com/

You know what? You're right. The goatee is out. 2005 marks the end of the goatee. 2006 is all about getting creative with your facial hair. Think I'm wrong? Which would you rather look like - this guy, or this guy? Exactly. Click around and get inspired. Or just check out the dancing girls.

Egyptian, Greek, and Roman Shaving Trivia

egypt_shaving.jpgHere's a little mindless info on shaving throughout history courtesy of the Daily Bubble:

The Egyptians, both men and women, made a fetish of shaving not only their faces but also their heads and any other body hair. Razors of gold and copper have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The mysterious Etruscans have left us fine razors of bronze. Somehow, their inheritors, the Romans, retreated to iron, which rusted away, leaving few archaeological examples.

Read on at DailyBubble.com to learn about the Greeks and the especially Romans, who kept the hair from their first shaves in "ornate receptacle[s]". Why haven't I seen one of these at a museum?

By the way the picture on the right is labeled "Egyptian Limestone Ostracon (Stone Flake with a Head-Shaving Scene)" and comes from GoAntiques.com. God I love google. I'm definitely buying stock the next time they IPO.

Single Serve Shaving Cream Pods

babson.gifReaders of our sister site Single Serve Coffee know all about coffee pods - those magical little pouches which hold exactly enough coffee beans for the perfect cup o' joe. Could that idea translate into shaving? A bunch of crazy Babson students think so.

Pods for shaving cream dispense exact amount of shave cream in pre-packaged capsules for one time use. Easily stored in slim travel case for the well-groomed, upwardly-mobile urban male. Babson students designed the new product for a|MEN|ity, maker of premium line of shaving and men’s grooming products.

We at ShavingStuff applaud the pioneering entrepreneurship Babson and a|MEN|ity are taking in creating a new shaving market segment. Kudos and good luck. No word yet on whether these pods will ever see the light of day, but we'll have news and reviews (and a new category) if they do.

More Clips on ThatsThePowerOf4.com

screen.pngJust a quick post to let you all know that ThatsThePowerOf4.com has put up some new video clips, continuing their spoof infomercial. Haven't been to ThatsThePowerOf4.com? Well, let me say this... it's interesting. This is Schick's website devoted to the Schick Quattro Power, made to look like a cheesy infomercial, "As Seen on TV"-style. Some of the clips are kind of humorous. Some feature Kato Kaelin. And some verge on showing an attractive woman. Overall they're not as edgy or indy as you'd want from a website. But hey, it's Friday and if you're stuck at the office, click on over to ThatsThePowerOf4.com and view a few clips. At least the production quality is high.

And if I may muse for a moment, why they didn't get schickquattropower.com (like schickquattro.com) is beyond me. Why the domain schickquattropower.com is still available is crazy, by hey, that's why I'm not in marketing.

November Wrap-Up

Another full month for ShavingStuff.

We had several reviews of shaving products, one for Billy Jealousy, one for KENMEN, and one reader review for the Tweezerman Deluxe Shaving Brush. The second half of the KENMEN review will come later this month.

Lots of emphasis on head-shaving this month. The HeadBlade and the DOVO Head Shaver are the two leaders in this category. Plus we found a website were you can upload a photo of yourself and see how you'd look bald.

We covered the launch of BuzzSkin, an online store featuring all the high-end shaving products you've come to know and love. And we even checked out the Conair Chrome Hot Lather Machine. Still can't get my head around this thing.

Big month ahead with the holidays approaching. Be sure to check out our holiday gift guide for suggestions on shaving-related gifts. We'll keep it updated with anything new that comes up, so check back often.

Thanks for a great month!

Blogpire in the News

mhtlogo.gifHere's a little shout out to Jay Brewer, found of Blogpire, who was profiled in this article from Mass High Tech.

An avid coffee drinker, Brewer started the company in May 2004 after he bought a Senseo coffee maker and decided to go home and review it online.

“I wondered if I found a new category, and I just wrote about this, I wondered if I could make any money,” he said.

Turns out, the answer is yes. If you've surfed around ShavingStuff you've probably run across links to other Blogpire sites, like Kitchen Contraptions, Liquor Snob, and The Cooking News. While I would still be shaving if not for him, I wouldn't be having all the fun of running a blog, interacting with readers and vendors, and reviewing products. Thanks Jay!
