Free Shipping on Kiehl's Products

logo_kiehls.gifKiehl's is offering free shipping on all orders over $40 from their website. Use coupon code "GIFT" when checking out. Plus get three free samples.

We're actually big fans of Kiehl's Ultimate Men's After Shave Balm & Moisturizer and Multi-Purpose Facial Formula for Men, despite the fact that someone over at Kiehl's doesn't think ShavingStuff is a legitimate shaving site and has rejected our bid to join their affiliate program four times.

Hey Kiehl's, what gives?

Kiehl's Ultimate Man Shave and Skin Sessions

logo_kiehls.gifKiehl's is hosting sessions on shaving and skin care at many of its stores during the second half of September. As regular readers probably know, I'm a big fan of their products. The Boston store has sessions from the 15th to the 30th, and for signing up you can receive a complimentary 8 oz. Grapefruit Luquid Body Cleanser. Give them a call if you're interested since space is limited. Kiehl's locations are available at their store locator.

Kiehl's Blue Eagle

K_blue_eagle.jpgA reader recently wrote in:

I am dropping you a line because I'm wondering how you use the blue eagle stuff. I understand that alot of people like it but i can't make it work for me - how wet is your face when you slap the stuff on? How thick/thin of a layer to you put on? I can't seem to find the right amount I suppose - if I put a thin nearly opaque layer on I get pretty bad razor burn, if I slap it on a little thicker than my razor gets badly clogged and I get a pretty lousy shave compared to my other products....

I love Kiehl's Blue Eagle. I tried a the White Eagle for a little while but found it made my face break out - possibly because of the menthol. These shaving creams actually work best when applied to a dry face. Seems totally nuts, but I've tried it both ways and I'm convinced dry is the way to go. Shave after you've showered so your facial hair is softer. To get the right amount I recommend using less than you think. Apply a small amount to your fingers and then work it into the skin. I go over the same area of my face several times with my fingers (without reapplying more Blue Eagle) which makes the cream turn a little white on my face. However by the time I start shaving a minute or two later the whiteness has faded and it appears as though I have very little cream on my face. Then I shave with a razor run under hot water, rinsing often. I recommend the Mach3 Power, but any high-quality razor will do.

One thing I really like about the dry shave is in the summer you aren't splashing hot water on your face. One of the worst feelings is stepping out of a shower all nice and clean and immediately starting to sweat. If you can make it work for you, the dry shave will be your ticket to the ultimate summer shave.

Remember - Kiehl's has a great return policy. You can return your products to the store you bought them at any time. Not sure about online returns, but I've returned products to them after several weeks of use and they're more than happy to refund my money.

Winter and Summer After Shave

winter_after_shave.jpgIn the winter I like to use Ultimate Mens After-Shave Balm and Moisturizer after I shave. It's a little thicker and a little more moisturizing, which helps protect my skin against the cold weather of New England.

Formulated especially for the shaven area of a man's face, this rich cream contains such beneficial ingredients as Allantoin, Avocado Oil, Cocoa Butter and Vitamin E to soothe and moisturize the skin after the impact of shaving- or anytime.

summer_after_shave.jpgIn the summer I like to use Multi-Purpose Facial Formula For Men. It's a lighter cream, which is helpful because my face tends to be a little oily during the humid months and doesn't need all the moisturizer of the winter one.

This extraordinary preparation is a cooling, alcohol-free facial moisturizer and multi-purpose treatment to address the specific concerns of a man's skin. Enriched with moisturizers to protect against dryness and pollution. Natural mineral clays absorb excess oil on the skin's surface. Formulated with Eucalyptus Extract and Caffeine to waken and refresh as well as Astaxanthin Complex (Astaxanthin and other carotenoids), derived from micro algae, which provides powerful antioxidant benefits.

Tub or Tube?

kiehls_tub.jpgTub.

It's that easy.

Tub (or "jar", as they like to call it) is 8 oz. for $16.50. Tube is 5 oz. for $14.00. Even if you totally suck at math you still can realize the tub is far more shave for the buck. Also, you'll waste less with the tub. With the tube you'll accidentally squeeze out more than you need - and you don't need a lot of Kiehl's to shave with. It's been 6 months and I'm still not close to halfway through my first tub of Blue Eagle.

Also, it looks cooler. Sit the tub out on your bathroom sink and make a statement about your shaving. It's bold. It's squat. It won't get knocked over like the tube.

Finally... travel. Order Kiehl's online and get some free samples of shaving cream. Use those for travel. You don't need a tube to travel with. Get a tiny container from Target and transfer some to that.

Tub.

We're done.

Kiehl's Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner

keihls_toner.jpgI've been using Kiehl's Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner for about a month now.

A very effective, alcohol-free toner made with pure, soothing herbal extracts. Also contains Burdock extract, known for its soothing properties. Excellent for use after shaving or to improve the appearance of problem areas and other minor skin irritations.

I use it after I'm finished shaving but before I put on any aftershave or lotion. I was looking forward to trying it since a good friend recommended using some sort of toner after shaving, but honestly I can't say my face feels or appears any different in the month I've been using it. Not sure the best way to apply it, but I moisten a cotton ball with the toner and wipe it across my face, which is the way Kiehl's recommends using it. If you're ordering from Kiehl's you get three free samples. Might as well try some toner. I'd love to hear feedback from anyone using this or a similar product. Jury's still out for me.

Notes From the Field

My dad, who prefers shaving before showering so that he can wash off the shaving cream in the shower, reports that the shaving system I recommended - Mach3 Power and Kiehl's Shave Cream (Blue Eagle) - works equally well before and after a shower. Conventional wisdom is that shaving after you shower is better since your skin and beard hair is softer, however it's good to know that if you want to buck the trend you have that option.

The Student Becomes the Master

K60205_93x224.jpg6025.jpgYears ago when I was in high school my father taught me how to shave. At the time his favorite razor was the Gillette Sensor and his favorite shaving cream was Clinique's Cream Shave. This weekend I had the rare pleasure of improving on my dad's 45 years of shaving experience. I leant him my Mach3 Power and my Kiehl's Blue Eagle. He was blown away that a shave could be that good. His exact quotes:

"Un-fucking-believable"
"It's the anti-shave it's so smooth."

My Current Toner from Kiehls

kiehls_logo.gifK31104_93x224.jpgI can't tell you how much I love this toner. Or can I? No alcohol, just a refreshing menthol splash after a nice shave. I love this stuff.

"This alcohol-free toner formulated especially for men contains herbal extracts to soothe the facial skin after the impact of shaving. Recommended for normal to oily skin types, this preparation also contains nourishing Panthenol (pro-vitamin B-5) in addition to pure Corn Mint Oil for a cooling, mentholated effect to just-shaved skin."

Welcome to Kiehl's - Face
