Review of REN High Glide Cooling Shaving Cream

ren_high_glide.jpgBeen shaving with REN High Glide Cooling Shave Cream for the last couple weeks. It's about time we chat.

Now REN shaving cream is one of the few creams which is intended for a dry face. Kiehl's is another brand which comes to mind when thinking about shaving creams like this. There aren't that many of them. The prevailing philosophy is that you want a good base of water or oil to start with. But REN shaving cream makes it work.

The big advantage of a "dry" shave is that it's quicker and much less messier. You don't end up with water and lather dripping down your chest, and you can skip the step of waiting for the water to heat up before priming your face. The downside, at least for REN, is the gunk factor.

Now I've read a lot of shaving reviews where the reviewer is obsessed with shaving cream gunking up his razor. And for a while I too graded shaving creams on their gunkiness. But then I moved on. Never really bothered me. Until REN High Glide Cooling Shave Cream, which stubbornly refused to remove itself from my five-bladed Gillette Fusion. So I dropped down to four blades and whipped out my Schick Quattro. Still a high gunk factor. So I dropped down the three blades and whipped out my Mach3. Sweet spot achieved! (Which is good news since my two-bladed Gillette Sensor is buried somewhere deep under the sink.)

My recommendation - REN High Glide Cooling Shaving Cream works best with three blades or less. And it works really well. Nice close shave. Occasional nick or cut, but nothing too out of the ordinary.

REN recommends trying High Glide with their Tamanu High Glide Shaving Oil. I didn't have any around, but I did just receive a bottle of Taylor of Old Bond Street Pre-Shave Oil, (which smells awesome!), and that improved the shave a little, but not enough to make me say you have to use an oil base. That said, the Taylor of Old Bond smells like a wonderfully aromatic gin, and the REN High Glide smells vaguely floral, so I felt like I was shaving in some fancy high-class cocktail. Love it!

REN High Glide Cooling Shave Cream is $40 for a 5.1 Ounce/150 ml tube. If you're interested in a dry shave, and you use a three-bladed razor or less, give REN a shot.

This Just In - Ren High Glide Cooling Shave Cream

ren_high_glide.jpgIt's been almost 2 years since we had some very pleasurable shaves with products from REN. Our friends at Details for Men just sent over a tube of Ren High Glide Cooling Shave Cream, a recent arrival at their online men's grooming product store.

Formulated to soften and lift whiskers it contains Biosaccharides to help reduce inflammation and redness, bisabolo from Calendula to soothe and Peppermint Leaf Oil to cool. In addition, essential trace elements (Magnesium, Copper, Zinc) keep skin energized while Pumpkin Fruit Enzymes help prevent ingrown hair.

I have to say, I'm very glad to see another use for pumpkins besides Halloween and state fairs. I recently saw a truly gigantic pumpkin (among many other truly gigantic pumpkins) win first prize at the Topsfield Fair. What happens to that pumpkin after the fair is over? Does some nice family adopt it and care for it? Now I know. It ends up in shaving cream helping to prevent ingrown hairs. That makes me happy.

Ren High Glide Cooling Shave Cream is $40 for a 5.1 Ounce/150 ml tube. Check back soon for our full review.

Review of REN Tamanu Shaving Oil and Multi-Vitamin Aftershave Balm

renShavingOil.gifFor the past couple weeks we've been shaving with products from REN, courtesy of Details for Men. The first thing you'll notice about REN is the cool packaging. Clear plastic cylinders with pump tops - seals the contents inside so they don't oxidize; provides a clean and easy way to get a small amount out. Also, fits easily into a travel bag. Genius. Why can't more products be packaged like this?

Let's start with REN Tamanu High Glide Shaving Oil. Can I just say was a pleasure it's been to shave with a clear product again? Guys - if you're using a white thick foam and can't see your skin under your shaving cream, come on over to the light side. REN goes on clear. It has a slight beige tint which allows you to see what parts of your face you've covered and what you've missed, but you see all your skin in all its glory. Trying to maintain a goatee? No problem. Got a trouble spot you always nick yourself on? Steer clear. Great shave. No mess. No gunking up your razor.

REN has a commitment to using high quality natural ingredients. Even items which sound foreign and chemical have their source sited. Butyrospermum Parkll?!? Oh, that's Shea Butter. Cetaearyl Glucoside?!? Ah, that's from corn. I love corn. Corn is nice.

REN Tamanu High Glide Shaving Oil is £15 at REN's website. Why anyone would want a 15 pound bottle of shaving cream is beyond me. I suggest you click on over to Details for Men and buy the $28/1.7 ounce version. Much easier to handle.

renAftershave.gifNext up is REN Multi-Vitamin Soothing Aftershave Balm. True to REN's natural ingredient commitment, this aftershave contains "no Petrochemicals, Sulfates, Parabens, Synthetic Fragrance, Synthetics Colors, TEA, DEA, Glycols, Silicones, & PEGS." ShavingStuff wife was all over this stuff. She's using it, and she's insisting that I use it. REN aftershave balm has a pleasing mild floral scent. It almost reminds me of lavender, but I could be picking the wrong flower here. Anyway, not meant for dad. Meant for you. Again, love the pump top. Your skin will drink this up. £19.50 from REN's website. $45 from Details for Men.

We highly recommend REN products for all types of shaves, shavers, and skin-types.

This Just In - Ren Shaving Products

renShavingOil.gifrenAftershave.gifOnce again our friends over at Details for Men have sent over some shaving products to try. This time they're products from REN, which I have to admit I had never heard of before. Here's a little quote from REN's website:

At REN we believe in beautiful, healthy skin. That is why we pioneered the concept of Clean Bio Active Skincare. Skincare products that are formulated with cutting edge, clinically proven bio actives whilst being free from skin unfriendly ingredients. Our philosophy is summarised in our 5 principles: Right Ingredients, Right Science, Right Product Experience, Right Environmental Impact, Right Attitude.

All right!

Not sure if you can tell from the pictures, but their packaging is pretty darn unique. (And recyclable) Haven't seen a shaving cream or oil in a pump-top dispenser before. Definitely looking forward to putting REN to the test.

We've just finished up our MenScience reviews, and are about to start on an Anthony Logistics for Men Kit (also courtesy of Details for Men), so expect the full REN review toward the end of the year.
