All-Natural Father's Day Gift Ideas 2009

everymanjackkit.jpgGot a dad, husband, or father who's concerned about the environment? A green guy?

Take a look at these all-natural Father's Day Gift Ideas:

Old Post Road Oils: Eco-Friendly Shaving Lubricant

"We created No. 4 Shaving Soap because we believe shaving foam has become obsolete. Natural soap provides the best lubrication for shaving. But not just any natural soap; it has to be extraordinarily mild.

The slightest bit of harshness will burn a face. And natural soaps today don't pass muster. That's why we developed No. 4 specifically for shaving. We threw out all the conventional wisdom and blended a natural soap that gives the fullness of lubrication without any of the harshness."

Every Man Jack Four of a Kind Kit - Fragrance Free: Dermatologist Tested, Fragrance Free, Ideal for Sensitive Skin

RetroRazor: A Greener and Cheaper Way to Shave

"The RetroRazor handle will last for years, and replacement blades cost at least 90 percent less than cartridges. Blades will run most users between 15 and 75 cents per week. Safety razor blades have very little packaging or materials, almost 97% less waste!

Kiss My Face Moisture Shave Fragrance Free:

"Fragrance Free Moisture Shave contains a moisturizing formula with antiseptic Peppermint to cool and stimulate, emollients Olive Oil and Coconut Oil and Aloe Vera for healing. Goldenseal heals and acts as an antiseptic. Arnica aids circulation. PH Balanced, contains no animal ingredients, no artificial colors."

Preserve Razor Triple: Recycled and Recyclable:

"If you shave with a cartridge razor, consider switching to the Preserve Razor Triple as a nod to the 'green' movement. Recycline makes the handles from 100% recycled plastics, including at least 65% recycled Stonyfield Farm yogurt cups, and provides a postage-paid label to mail in your worn-out or broken handle to be recycled. The recycled handles get a second life as plastic lumber for park benches, decks, etc."

Father's Day 2009 Gift Ideas

fathersday.jpgFather's Day is coming up quickly - the date for Father's Day 2009 is June 21st - and gift ideas for dads, fathers, and husbands are being suggested fast and furiously in the media. So when you come to Shaving Stuff, what do you think we're gonna suggest for a Father's Day gift? That's right. Shaving gifts!

My picks for gift ideas for Father's Day:

For the gadget guy, pick up the ultimate shaving gadget, the Braun Pulsonic Series 7.

Guys like gadgets.

Manly, easy in the hand, full of buttons, useful gadgets.

For the man who loves a well made tool, grab a Merkur safety razor.

The Merkur feels great in the hand - solid and hefty, like a good tool should. It's a thing of beauty.

For the headshaver in the family, give him the HeadBlade:

Maybe your hairline is receding, or maybe you're a cage fighter, or maybe you just need a new spring look. Whatever the reason, if you're going to be scraping your skull with a razor on a regular basis, you're going to need a tool that works its wonders without taking forever to get the job done.

Is he hairy? Needs to do some manscaping? The Philips BodyGroom is one of the best selling grooming tools on the market, and it consistently scores 4 out of 5 stars on customer reviews. You can't go wrong with that.

Maybe you just want to pamper him with a luxurious shave cream, in which case you'll want to check out the Speick Men Shave Cream.

It smells out of this world - manly and earthy, with a hint of lavender. The shave itself was very smooth, and the cream contains beeswax and glycerin for a gentle, moisturizing feeling.

I also highly recommend the Jack Black Supreme Creme Triple Cushion Shave Lather. It's thick and rich, and kind of nutty. What other shave cream has macadamia nut oil in it?

Men who shave in the shower will love the ShavWet - a very handy shaving mirror, fog-free, and fits in a travel bag nicely.

Does he rock the goatee? Give him a GoateeSaver to help him keep it in line.

Maybe your dad, husband, or son doesn't shave? How about a beard shirt?

No matter who you're buying a gift for this Father's Day, you're sure to stumble across some great suggestions in our archives.

Remember, only a month to go, so start looking now!

Manscaping Monday: Valentine's Day Deals

barberpole200.jpg
Ladies, this Valentine's Day, get your man the tools they need to keep that manscape under control. Bachelors, go ahead and treat yourself to some new gear this year. You're worth it.

From the face to the back, from nose to ear, the removal of unwanted hair is serious business. The market is full of shaving devices, some tame, some lame, and some that'll make you blush. If it grows hair, someone will invent a way to remove it.

Right now there are some deals to help you save a buck while keeping the manscape well groomed.

First, from now until February 28, get the Andis Professional 04710 T-Outliner Personal Trimmer, normally $56, for only $36 (plus free shipping) by entering coupon code ANDSFEB9. That's almost half off, and probably the lowest price you'll see for a while on that. The Andis is ideal for trimming necks, beards, mustaches, and edging around ears.

Next, the Panasonic Sonic-2 Men's Pro-Curve Wet / Dry Shaver is only $19.99 at Newegg.com with free shipping. No coupons or rebates necessary, just a good razor at a great price.

Over at urth, get free shipping on orders over $50 through February 12 with the coupon code "love" at checkout. Recommended: Man's Best Friend Kit, with Face Wash, Shave Formula, Face Balm SPF 15, and Face Scrub, for a superb grooming experience.

For neck and upper back grooming, the Swerve Neck Razor is the ticket. Get $1 off each single or triple pack of Swerve with the coupon code REFERNOW.

Get a free MANGROOMER Essential Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer with the purchase of the Private Body Shaver. Just add both to your cart and then enter coupon code MNGRMFB9 at checkout. That's a $15 value.

Meritline.com has a 10-in-1 Stainless Steel Manicure Kit for $8.49 (and free shipping) with the coupon code "M24803615POFF", until February 20th. It contains two nail clippers, tweezers, scissors, nail file, cuticle pusher, and more, in a leather case.

And finally, for the newbie old-school shaver, try Taylor of Old Bond Street Avocado Shaving Cream for a 'stimulating' and moisturizing lather that contains 'herbal aromatics' to soothe your skin. No deals right now on this, but put it on your wish and watch lists if you can't flip for the $18 today.

Billy Jealousy Gets Personal With Gifts

mel_free2ozchristmas4.jpg
In the age of big corporations and outsourced phone support, it's nice to come across a company that still has a personal touch. Today only, buy $40 worth of grooming products from Billy Jealousy (at their site) and you and a friend will both receive a free 2oz bottle of Hydroplane shaving cream (which is one of the absolute best shaving creams out there, and we should know).

Here's the personal part - place your order on billyjealousy.com, then send an email to Melissa at Billy Jealousy telling her the name and address of the friend you'd like the Hydroplane to go to, and she'll make it happen. What? No online impersonal form? No faceless click? I'm so not used to interacting with people the way. It feels weird... and good, at the same time.

We've purposely not mentioned Melissa's email address, but you should be able to figure it out, Sherlock. If not, click the picture above for an expanded view and look in the lower left corner. Damn you spammers! You have to make everything difficult.

The Shaving Stuff 2008 Holiday Gift Guide

holiday_guide.jpgThe holiday season is upon us once again, and it's time for all of you to start stimulating the economy. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to spend your way out of this economic crisis, one gift at at time! OK, maybe not the soundest advice, but there will be some people you still want to buy for, and some who will still be expecting a gift. Aside from the electric razors we've tried to keep most things below $50 on this year's holiday gift guide.

Shaving Cream
Here's a list of tried-and-true winners as well as a couple choice brands we shaved with over the last year worthy of their company. Any of these shaving products will elevate your shave to new levels of comfort, closeness, and class.
The Art of Shaving - $38
Sharp's - $45
Billy Jealousy - $50
MENSGROOM - $52
MenScience - $55
ZIRH - $59
Baxter of California - $60
Ritual - $79
Peter Thomas Roth - $100
Gentlemen's Refinery - $199
John Allan's - $245

Still not seeing it? Surf on over to the Details for Men gift kit page and see what strikes your fancy.

Cartridge Razors
I'm still loving the powered razors. A little vibration goes a long way toward a smooth and comfortable shave. The Gillette Fusion may trump Schick on number of blades, but the Quattro's now got this kick-ass trimmer for keeping your whiskers or sideburns in line.
Gillette Fusion Power - $10.99
Schick Quattro Titanium Trimmer - $12.49

On the other ends of the spectra, we recommend the environmentally conscience Recycline razor, and the experimental Rolling Razor.
Recycline Preserve Triple Razor - $7.49
Rolling Razor - $14.95

Electric Razors
Same group as last year, only the Braun Pulsonic has been rebranded the Series 7. Still the top of the line traditional electric razor in my book. If rotary is your game, choose between either the wet/dry lubricant-dispensing Moisture Shaving System, or the more classic arcitec.
Braun Series 7 - $227
Philips Norelco Moisture Shaving System - $129
Philips Norelco arcitec - $219

Pubic Shaving
The BodyGroom is still going strong, now with a professional edition with "high-performance trimmer attachment", as well as another set of hysterical videos worthy of a Webby. And if completely bare is where you're headed, there's still no beating the Cleancut - the #1 choice in the porn industry.
Philips Norelco Bodygroom - $49.99
Seiko Cleancut - $67

Head Shaving
Just like you wouldn't shave downstairs without the proper equipment, you don't want to shave the roof without the proper tools. Get the gear designed for your noggin.
Headblade - $10.99
Remington Short Cut Clipper - $28.49
Sharps Mission: Control Bald Head Balm SPF 15 - $24

Nose Shaving
As you get older, your hair follicles move from the top of your head to your nose and ears. It's a scientifically proven fact. Look it up. I just finished the Wikipedia page on it. These tools will help you combat the forsaken follicle foliage.
Groom Mate Platinum XL Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer - $18.88
Philips Norelco Nose and Ear Trimmer - $12.99

Back Shaving
A year later and I still don't want to talk about it. If you know a guy who needs one of these, just do him a favor - buy it for him, and give it to him while no one else is in the room.
MANGROOMER - $39.95

Shaving Accessories
Nicks and cuts come at exactly the wrong time. Your dopp kit needs a Nick Stick for fast healing after a particularly brutal shave. And while I still haven't made peace with the goatee, I have to admire the ingenuity which went into the Goatee Saver. Somebody's got to get us out of this economic mess.
The Nick Stick - $5.95
The Goatee Saver - $19.99

Books
Leisureguy continues to update his tome and put my work to shame. Get the straight dope on old-school shaving techniques and all the current soaps, oils, and creams that go with them.
Leisureguy's Guide to Gourmet Shaving: Shaving Made Enjoyable, Second Edition - $11.65
Sharp Practice: The Real Man's Guide to Shaving - $4.89
The Great American Bathroom Book - $20

Fog-Free Shaving Mirrors

InterDesign_power_lock_LG.jpgAre you a shower multitasker? Do you brush your teeth and listen to the radio while you're shampooing and rinsing? If so, and you have a lot of light in your shower, perhaps you'd be interested in a fog-free shaving mirror.

ShavingDirect has a great selection of fog-free shaving mirrors. Some with suction cups. Some which clip on to your shower head. Some with magnification. Some with an iPod hookup. (Not kidding!) Some with a light.

While I haven't tested all these brands with lights, my general reaction has been disappointment. The lights on these mirrors tend to be battery-powered LEDs with underwhelming brightness. That's why I really only recommend shaving in the shower if you've got a lot of light already.

And if you do, get a mirror! Shaving in the shower is great. No need to worry about making a mess with shaving cream. Easy to rinse off after you are done. Just shave toward the end of your shower after your skin and whiskers have had a little time to soften. Then try to figure out what you're going to do with all that free time.

Product Review: Every Man Jack Shaving Cream

everymanjack.jpgI was at our local Target today, checking our their mega expansion into the building next door, and I found some interesting shaving cream - Every Man Jack. Actually there's a whole line of Every Man Jack men's grooming products from shaving cream to body wash to face lotion. And they're all-natural.

Came home. Did a little surfing. Found this article which had a bunch of positive feedback in the comments. Found this review which hated it. Found this article about Ritch Viola, the creator of Every Man Jack, which talks about the brand's creation, ingredients, and marketing.

The final piece of the puzzle came from industrial designer Wai-Loong Lim of Y Studios. Viola wanted a custom design for some of his packaging. Lim designed the containers for the face wash, body wash and hair care products. The design was inspired by the overall identity of the line, and an unexpected source: an old Mexican tequila bottle. It was perfect.

If you look at the products in the picture, you'll see they actually have a block of wood on the top. Oh, old mexican tequila bottle! You're always there to inspire me when I need you most.

Every Man Jack Beginner's Luck Kit is $24.99. Each individual product is $4.99 or less. If you try them out, let us know what you think.

The Great American Bathroom Book from Ritual

ritual_bathroom_book.jpgWhat do you take into the bathroom to help with your morning business? A magazine? A crossword puzzle? A laptop? (C'mon, we've all done it.) Now our friends over at Ritual have come out with the perfect bathroom companion - The Great American Bathroom Book:

Mark Twain said: "A classic is something that everybody wants to have read, and nobody wants to read." Since you'll probably never have time to read every good book cover to cover, THE GREAT AMERICAN BATHROOM BOOK lets you in on the key points of an all-time great in just 10 or 15 minutes of reading. It's the perfect way to pass time on your thrown.

The King declares "genius!"

The Great American Bathroom Book is $20. And for those whose business is an aromatic nightmare, may we also recommend Ritual's Nature Calls, a toilet bowl deodorizer which works surprisingly well. See our review here.

Reader Review of Barbasol Ultra Sensitive Skin Shaving Cream and Balm

barbasol_014.jpgShaving Stuff reader Keith recently wrote in with this review of Barbasol Ultra Sensitive Skin shaving cream and balm.

I switched to the Kiss My Face line of shaving lotions a number of years ago after trying a sample because I felt it did as good a job as my current shaving cream and better prevented razor burn. I chanced across this Barbasol shaving cream by accident and necessity and was impressed with how much nicer the shaving experience was. I felt it was both a smoother and more effective shave and haven't had any razor burn issues. It is now my new shaving cream. Oh - and the moisture balm is nice at conditioning the skin without any sting or discomfort which is a nice added bonus. I'd recommend these products to anyone with sensitive skin trying to avoid razor burn while getting a nice close shave.

Nice! Sounds like we've got a winner. You can find Barbasol Ultra Sensitive Skin at most major supermarkets and drugstores, typically for under $5.
